On AICE news, the standings of the AICE vs. Japan contests have been updated. Japan currently holds a 3 to 1 lead. Contest winners are Tomoko Miyake, Gal Sone, Elizabeth Canady and Yamamoto.
2001 Food Battle Club roster
Before this week’s AICE vs. Japan contest, the most recent Japanese eating contest in which multiple Americans competed was probably Food Battle Club from 2001. Not only did Carlene LeFevre and Charles Hardy compete, pro wrestler King Kong Bundy also ate in that contest. Bundy received a higher ranking (#14) than either Carlene LeFevre (#18) or Charles Hardy (#15) (I am not sure if the ranking occurred before or after the event).

All-you-can-eat buffet restaurant owners in Changsha, Hunan Province, worry when Zheng Guangshun arrives.
Zheng, 38, can eat at least 400 g of rice in a single sitting. He became a well-known figure in Hunan’s provincial capital after he ate 21 yuanxiao (sweet dumplings made of glutinous rice flour) in two minutes, followed by 10 big zongzi in three minutes, at an eating competition in 2005.
400g is .88 pounds. (I assume they meant 4000 g)

Eating contests in “Survivor: China”
RealityTVWorld has a recap of last night’s immunity challenge in “Survivor: China” which consisted of eating contests involving Chinese foods which are generally not found in a typical Chinese restaurant in the United States:
Frosti quickly ate his 10 chicken hearts ahead of Peih-Gee, and Fei Long took a 1-0 lead. Courtney and Jaime were close as they both tried to choke down three pieces of eel — which included the heads — however Jaime was just a hair quicker opening her mouth and allowing Zhan Hu to tie the score.
Erik also won a close round against Amanda — chomping and swallowing three baby turtles and narrowly being the first to reveal an empty mouth — giving Zhan Hu a 2-1 lead. James faced Denise next and both had to eat two chicken fetuses with feathers. James tried his damndest to throw the challenge, but Denise couldn’t choke back the chicken. James put on a good show, but once he realized Denise wasn’t going to finish her dish, he solemnly ate all that was on his plate and gave Zhan Hu a 3-1 lead.
Needing only one point to win Immunity, Erik ate a 1,000-year-old egg faster than Frosti and clinched it for Zhan Hu.
Japanese buffet weight gain contest
Deresque has a blog entry with a lot of pictures from a lunch last month he had with 13 other competitive eating friends at the Grand Buffet Hawaiian Island in Tokyo. The fourteen eaters were grouped into 7 two person teams and each member was weighed before and after eating lunch at the buffet. The team with the highest combined weight gain was proclaimed the winner.
The top 5 single person weight gains were:
1. Takuya Yamamoto, 23.76 lb. / 10.8 kg (54.3 kg -> 65.1 kg), on #1 team
2. Mio “Sakura” Takahashi 15.2 lb. / 6.9 kg (31.3. kg -> 38.2 kg), on #2 team
3. Tomoko Miyake, 14.3 lb. / 6.5 kg (38.2 kg -> 44.7 kg) on #2 team
4. Asami “Essen” Miyanishi, 13.4 lb. / 6.1 kg (unlisted start & finish) on #3 team
5. Yamaguchi 12.32 lb. / 5.6 kg (60.6 kg -> 66.2 kg), on #1 team
Sakura Takahashi had the highest percentage weight gain, 38.2 / 31.3 = 22%, edging out Takuya Yamamoto, 65.1 / 54.3 = 20%
Wanko soba contests in Hot Springs and NY
From breitbart.com
The city of Hanamaki in Iwate Prefecture will host the region’s famous “wanko-soba” noodle-eating competition in two U.S. cities, according to city officials.
In the competition, participants will eat as many bite-size portions of buckwheat noodles in a lacquered bowl as possible in a limited time. A champion from a February competition held in the city finished 225 bowls of noodles in five minutes.
The competition is also popular in the Iwate capital of Morioka.
The city will host the events in the Arkansas city of Hot Springs, a sister city of Hanamaki, on Wednesday, and in New York on Saturday, where the association of Iwate expatriates marked the 10th anniversary.
I have not been able to find any details online about the Arkansas or New York contests.

The winner of the competition was Mohammad Saleem who managed to eat two kilograms of Haleem in 30 seconds.
“I am feeling really good. They gave us two minutes to finish it but I don’t know in how much time I finished that much,” said Saleem.
An eatery in the city, called ‘Pista House’, started organising this competition in 2003 with vegetarian versions of Haleem during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The owner of eatery said he organised the competition despite recent terror attacks in the city to ease tension among residents.
“We have organised this competition to make people feel a little relaxed,” said M. A. Majeed, organiser of the competition.
