Bi-national big burger benefit

The Windsor, Ontario (Detroit area) Star reports that a burger eating contest will be held on Saturday for teams of 4 eaters from both Canada and the United States to benefit charities. Teams will attempt to eat Bunda’s Big V8 burger from Bubi’s Awesome Eats. The V8 burger has 8 pounds of meat and reportedly weighs 18 pounds in total. WDFN.com has more details about the event.

Bubi’s Awesome Eats has a standing offer of $1,000 to the first person to consume a Bunda’s Big V8 burger along with the bun and 4 of 7 possible toppings in under 90 minutes. Some of the possible topppings include eight tomatoes, 24 ounces of ketchup and 30 ounces of Bubi’s sauce. No diner has succeeded in that challenge in the five years it has been offered. Last month, the restaurant had Canada’s tallest man, 7 foot 7 inch Jerry Sokoloski, attempt the sandwich. He finished about 15% of it. A gallery and video of the attempt are available.

72 ounce steak record broken

In a forum thread on bodybuilding.com, DedicatedForLif/FuriousPete123 announces he ate a 72 ounce steak in under 7 minutes, breaking Frank Pastore’s record of 9.5 minutes. He submitted a video of his meal to youtube.

I am unaware of any other claims on the 72 ounce record. Cookie Jarvis ate a 76 ounce steak in with a side of creamed spinach in 7.5 minutes

In another bodybuilding.com thread, a banana eating contest is taking place. DedicatedForLif/FuriousPete is the currently tied for the lead in that contest with 16 bananas. Eatfeats commenter Alex from Panama is the other co-leader. There is a female entry in the contest, Simpy, who ate 5 bananas The contest ends at midnight Sunday if anyone wants to submit his or her video.

2007 Krystal finals on Canadian TV

The basementmusing blog reports on television offerings at a bowling alley:

So he changed the chanel to good old TSN. To his shegrin what was on was the Krystal burger eating competition. What we began to see unfold was dudes by the name of Crazy Legs Conti eating burgers in front of thousands of screaming hillbillies from Tennessee.

TSN is the Canadian sports channel. It is interesting that this year’s finals would be rerun on Canadian televison, but has not been shown (to the best of my knowledge) on ESPN / ESPN2 since it originally aired in October.

Canadian bodybuilder’s eating challenge videos

Peter Czerwinski (DedicatedForLif/FuriousPete123), winner of the most recent video based eating contest on bodybuilding.com, has uploaded some videos of his eating challenges to his youtube page (page 2). He has eaten a 72 ounce steak in 12 minutes and a 106 ounce steak in a half an hour. Most recently, he attempted to consume 25 cups of rice (he managed to finish 18).

In another international steak eating challenge video, a blonde woman consumes a large steak of unlisted size in Argentina.

And in another bodybuilding / competitive eating video, Juris “Dr. Big Time” Shibayama has uploaded a video of him bench pressing 500 pounds.

update In more Dr. Big Time news, he says that his Wing Bowl stunt suggestion has been accepted and he will attempt it on January 8. The person he talked to at WIP did not mention any geographic restrictions for Wing Bowl 16 stunt attempters, so non-Philly residents who want to compete might consider submitting a stunt request. I have not been able to find any online Wing Bowl 16 rules.

Canadian only wing contest – $5000 first prize

A wing eating contest with a $5000 first prize is being sponsored by The Rock FM . Qualifiers are being held on Sunday during football games at the Wing Shack in Whitby, Ontario. The application form has the country fixed at “Canada”, so the contest is probably restricted to Canadian citizens.

The winner of the previous contest, held during the Super Bowl, was Jade Dozentroth. A video from that event can be seen at http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q_WoRQ3ANNo She ate 60 wings (and had 20 rejected for improper cleaning)

Toronto Star on Eat Your Face Off

The Toronto Star has an excellent writeup of the Eat Your Face Off contests:

With the salesmanship of Ron Popeil and the bombast of Ed McMahon, the heavily-sideburned Chapman is emceeing this competition, frantically barking the play-by-play throughout — “You’ve got to finish your milk! Your momma always told you, you’ve gotta finish your milk!” — including the two amateur meets, the first of which kicked off the entire show, right in the middle of the casino.

Celeste, star of Ottawa public access cable

With the biggest Canadian eating contest this weekend, I reposted the start of a blog entry that was originally on the Montreal Expos website in 2002. The blog entry describes a public access cable show on Ottawa cable that starred a woman named Celeste who would eat a large meal during the broadcast. The entry is in all probability a joke, but in the minor chance it was an actual program, I thought I would see if anyone had any additional information about it.

The start of the blog entry is after the jump

Canadian woman in critical condition after mouth stuffing contest

The London (Ontario, CA) Free Press reports that an unnamed woman is in critical condition after choking at a mouth stuffing contest at the Western Fair. The objective of the contest was to stuff as many marshmellows as possible at one time into one’s mouth. Paramedics were apparently not present during the contest and had to be called in. This is the second tragic incident at a Canadian contest; a man died in a wing eating contest in Regina in 2004.

Short story (and possible novel) with female competitive eater

The Columbus Dispatch has a review of “This Is Not Chick Lit,” a collection of short stories by female authors. The reviewer has the following comments on one of the short stories in that book:

Most delightfully surprising is The Seventy-two-Ounce Steak Challenge by Dika Lam, who has published only a few short stories in small magazines. Her touching and hilarious story follows two Chinese-Canadian sisters on a working vacation in Calgary, Alberta, where one of them starts down the path that will take her into becoming “the champion you know and love — winner of the International Matzo-Ball-Eating Contest, title-holder of the Conch Fritter Invitational, the girl who downed nine sticks of butter in five minutes.”

A review in econoculture says that Ms. Lam is working on extending her short story into a novel.

Angela Michaud makes impressive debut at Casino Niagra

(from competitiveeaters.com/news.htm) Thanksgiving weekend, AICE held a series of three contests in pumpkin pie, spaghetti & meatballs and large hotdogs at the Casino Niagra in Ontario which were won by Joe Menchetti, Coondog O’Karma and Mark Lyle respectively. Massachusetts resident Angie Michaud made a strong entrance into competitive eating at that event, taking third place in hot dogs and performing strongly in spaghetti, but finishing out of the money. She will compete in her first contest in the United States at the potato latke contest in New York City later this month.
