The blog for former NFL offensive lineman Tony Mandarich announced in July that he has completed his autobiography and is shopping it to publishers (No followup entries about its publication status have been made) In 1988, the New York Times wrote an article about Mandarich’s diet and training:

Mandarich knows that some opponents attribute his muscular development to steroids. But he insists he has built his physique slowly with a rigid weight training program and a menu that provides 15,000 calories a day. ”I’m not a big eater at any one meal,” he said, ”but I have seven meals every day.”

Three are 3,000-calorie milk shakes, two are thin steak sizzlers, one a 3-ounce beef patty and the seventh a whole 3-pound chicken.

Geva has an account of an eating contest at the Hometown Buffet in his myspace blog which ended with the entire party being banned from that restaurant for life for transgressions other than eating too much food. (The entry has adult language and content, so be warned)

While many fast food restaurants are promoting the healthiness of some of their menu items, the Heart Attack Grill in Arizona has gone in the opposite direction and calls its main offering “bypass burgers”. Those sandwiches can have up to two pounds of meat. The restaurant’s main gimmick is having its waitresses wear nurse outfits. The Arizona Board of Nurses has threatened a lawsuit against the restaurant. The restaurant has an extensive Wikipedia entry which is under threat of deletion

The grill does not have an eat it quickly and get it for free challenge, but it does have an Alpha Male Monday, in which a member of a party of four or more can get a free meal. There is a “Hall of Fame” on the restaurant website.

The Heart Attack Grill has a proto-blog which records happenings at the restaurant. In the June 2006 archives, the grill laid down a challenge to the IFOCE:

In fact, I still issue an open challenge to Kobayashi, The Black Widow (An “Honorary Guy” in anyone’s book), Joey Chestnut and the rest of those hotdog eating wussies at the IFOCE. A video clip of Kobayashi, Joey Chestnut and Tim “Eater X” Janus in a one minute Nathan’s hot dog eating contest on Good Morning America this morning can be viewed at http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=2142642 Joey Chestnut was declared the winner with 7.5 hot dogs in one minute, but Kobayashi’s and Tim’s totals were not announced (and apparently not counted). George Shea stated that Kobayashi would attend the Johnsonville bratwurst contest in Wisconsin.

Two competitive eaters have been members of their national ultimate frisbee team. Nobuyuki “The Giant” Shirota, was the tallest member of the Japanese team before he quit in 2004 to focus on competitive eating, which would pay off in a second place finish at Nathan’s. “Loppi” Joe Kershner, winner of last Friday’s amateur jalapeno popper contest, played on the US Juniors team in 2004, which went undefeated at the World Championship in Finland.
