Reminder – Science of Speed eating replay today

Press release about Sonya Thomas paper plate ad

(From sonyatheblackwidow.com) The website for the supermarket chain Harris Teeter has a press release about Sonya Thomas’ commerical for house brand paper plates. The other three commercials in the advertising campaign star former wrestler Hulk Hogan, speed drummer Mike Mangini and radio Host Art Bell. Harris Teeter is based on the east coast with most locations between Maryland and Georgia. Some of the ads have the products used in unconventional manners:

Bell promotes aluminum foil for Harris Teeter by shaping it into a hat with an antenna. Why, you may ask? It’s Art Bell, he needed to see if the yourhome aluminum foil protected his brain from paranormal frequencies.

NYTimes profiles Coney Island policeman

An NYTimes article about a policeman whose beat is the Coney Island boardwalk has a sad footnote to Joey Chestnut’s Nathan’s victory:

Joey Chestnut, 23, established a world record by eating 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes in the annual Nathan’s contest. Officer Nevandro posed for pictures with the new champion.

Then, at 4:11 p.m., a 46-year-old man on the beach approached a lifeguard, shouted, “Call 911!” and pulled out a .38-caliber pistol and shot himself in the face. Officer Nevandro had been talking with workers at Astroland, the amusement park, and when the call came across, he rode his golf cart to the scene. The lifeguard and the police tried to revive the man, who was from Pennsylvania, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

IFOCE Chicago jalapeño eating contest Sept 16

La Costeña will sponsor the “Feel the Heat” Jalapeño Eating Challenge to be held in Chicago on September 16. Registration will open August 1.

Regarding other possible IFOCE September events, it is not clear if the Buffalo Wing Festival will retain its IFOCE affiliation. Registration for the buffet bowl contest does not appear to be handled by IFOCE, and the page for the wing contest brings up an error.

Paul Barlow’s best dressed eater list out

“Super” Paul “Bonebreaker” Barlow, Jr. has compiled his list of the top 20 top best dressed IFOCE competitiors at the midpoint of 2007. The top 5 in that ranking follows:

1. Crazy Legs Conti – the man does it all…creativity, style, hair, entrances (Coney Island was my favorite), and is nuts to begin with, which may give him an unfair advantage!!
2. Tim Eater X Janus – We are getting so used to his facepaint, it almost cost him here. But, the man’s color-co-ordination on his mug, the Helen Haggerty incident, and his Hartford hollerings keep him in the fashion frontlines!!
3. Super Paul BBBMB- my pictures provide my evidence, and I think I’ve been a good influence on Crazy Legs, Hall Hunt, my daughter (a well-dressed neat eater) and some others who now know how important grooming has become!!
4. Steakbellie- a kilt!! That alone almost put him higher on this list – the tattoos are just gravy.
5. Russ Keeler – It’s not only the tie-dye, but to get your family in on the act, that’s just groovy!!

First IFOCE top 50 of 2007 out

(From the Godfather & Luther & Chip Simpson) The IFOCE rankings have been updated for the first time this year. Joey Chestnut has taken the top spot. Seaver Miller has dropped out completely, and Pat Bruss is ranked despite his competing in several AICE events. I am unaware of any results for about half of the eaters ranked 41-50.
