The new poll asks what you think will be the lowest wild card for the Krystal Square Off finals. Last year’s cutoff was 41 burgers, but that number might increase because the number of qualifiers and wild cards have been reduced.

Sonya Thomas confirms for JAX qualifier
The Krystal Square Off blog confirms that Sonya Thomas will compete in the Jacksonville qualifier on Labor Day and the twitter page is seeking input on questions to be asked in Sonya Thomas’ and Hall Hunt’s podcast interviews.

Humble Bob wins Chattanooga w/58 burgers
The KSO twitter page has announced that “Humble” Bob Shoudt has won the Chattanooga qualifier with 58 burgers. Sonya Thomas retains the Chattanooga qualifier record of 62.

Krystal Square Off “Running of the Grill”
You can follow the events of the opening festivities for Krystal Square Off V on the KSO twitter page at http://twitter.com/ksquareoff The “Running of the Grill” is almost concluded and the press conference is about to begin.
The Times Free Press has an article and WDEF has a blog entry about today and tomorrow’s events. Registration for amateurs tomorrow starts at 2pm.
Viewing tomorrow’s qualifier requires admission to the Southern Brewers Festival which costs $15.

Krystal Square Off V opening ceremony
The Krystal Square Off blog announces that the opening ceremony for the Krystal Square Off will take place on Friday starting at 1pm eastern. Events will include a “Running of the Grill”, a press conference and a 2 minute burger eating contest between Chattanooga news personalities.
KSO V final to be televised on FSN South
A press release on Krystalist reports that the finals of this year’s Krystal Square Off will be televised on Fox Sports Net South. The previous two finals appeared on ESPN. FSN South is televised in seven states: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Weekly updates about the qualifiers will also be aired on the network.
Krystal Square Off blog started
A blog has been started on the Krystal Square Off website at http://krystalsquareoff.com/blog/. The two most recent posts are about Sonya Thomas’ absence from the Chattanooga qualifier and Humble Bob’s hope to break the triple digit mark. The blog mentions a rumor that Sonya might compete in the Jacksonville qualifier Labor Day weekend.

Krystal Square Off V purse $50,000
An announcement on KrystalSquareOff.com reports that the purse for this year’s Krystal Square Off will be $50000. The prize breakdown:
1st $20,000 2nd – $10,000 3rd – $5,000 4th – $3,000; 5th – $2,500; 6th – $2,000; 7th – $1,850; 8th – $1,500; 9th – $1,400; 10th – $1,250; 11th – $1,000; 12th – $500.
12 prizes and 11 known slots (7 qualifier winners, 3 wild cards and Joey Chestnut’s bye) probably implies that Kobayashi will also receive a bye.
Atlanta Krystal qualifier registration closed
Registration is now closed for the Atlanta Krystal qualifier on September 6. Registration is listed as open for the other 6 qualifiers.

Registration for the 2008 Krystal qualifiers is now available on the IFOCE.com contest pages.
More KSO V qualifier information
Additional information has been added to KrystalSquareOff about the qualfier circuit. A list of the venues has been posted. Five of the sites are the same as last year’s. The Chattanooga qualifier will be held at the Southern Brewers Festival and the Alabama qualifier will take place at a University of Alabama at Birmingham football game.
The wildcard page says that the top three non-winning performances will receive wild cards. Ties will be broken by second best amounts.
The KSO V finals page lists Joey Chestnut as the only current finalist, so Kobayashi might have to qualify.
Krystal Square Off V qualifiers announced
A page on krystalsquareoff announces the qualifiers for this year’s edition of the Krystal Square Off and a press release on Krystalist has the schedule:
Aug. 23 – Chattanooga, Tenn.
Sept. 1 – Jacksonville, Fla.
Sept. 6 – Atlanta, Ga.
Sept. 13 – Nashville, Tenn.
Sept. 14 – Knoxville, Tenn.
Sept. 20 – Birmingham, Ala.
Sept. 21 – Memphis, Tenn.
There will be three wild cards.
update Times Free Press has an article with podcast interviews of Bob Shoudt and Joey Chestnut. The purse for Krystal Square Off V will exceed the $35,000 last year’s contest awarded. Bob Shoudt says he hopes to eat 120 burgers, a pace of one burger per 4 seconds.

Krystalist: qualifiers start in approximately 2 weeks
The Krystalist blog has an entry about Jill Stoler’s 3rd place finish in the women’s division of the Chef One dumpling eating contest in Queens which mentions that the qualifier circuit for Krystal Square Off V will start in a “couple of weeks.” If qualifiers take place on weekends, this would put the initial qualifier on August 16/17 or August 23/24 depending on how the two weeks is rounded. This would result in 5 or 6 qualifiers if one qualifier a week is held.
Atlanta eaters practice for KSO V
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has an article about Loren “Bubba” Yarbrough, Larry McNeil and “Super” Paul Barlow’s practice session for Krystal Square Off V in which they try to eat 15 Krystal burgers as fast as possible. Qualifier dates for this years Square Off have yet to be announced.
The men try to avoid “reversals” because they don’t want their bodies to regularly respond that way when they compete. But sometimes it can’t be helped.
“If you don’t puke every now and then, it’s because you didn’t try hard enough,” Yarbrough said. “That’s just a fact of life.”
Krystal Square Off V finals September 28
KrystalSquareOff.com announces that the date for this year’s Krystal Square Off finals will be September 28, a month earlier than previous years. The site will remain the Tennessee River in downtown Chattanooga. The qualifier schedule will be announced later.

2007 Krystal Square Off to be televised on Japanese TV
Ken Aoki reports that the 2007 Krystal Square Off finals will be televised in Japan even though there were no Japanese competitors after Kobayashi’s withdrawal. The contest will be televised 12 times over the next two months on various Japanese sports channels. The program will be an hour, longer than the approximately 35 minute duration of the American broadcast.
