Kuntzman: Joey a “disgusting spectacle” without G. Shea

Gersh Kuntzman has a new column in the Brooklyn Paper about the Nathan’s finals. The first half is about Kobayashi receiving a sponsor’s exemption. The second half is an encomium to George Shea which closes with the following statement:

So, sure, Joey Chestnut may down 60 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes on Friday, but without Shea, he’d just be a disgusting spectacle.

ABCNews also has a new interview with Kobayashi.

MLE.asia: Joey Chestnut vs. Kobayashi in Singapore July 27

ifiy has a link to MajorLeagueEating.asia, which announces that Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi will face off in an eating contest in Singapore July 27. Three qualifiers to select local entrants will be held and the purse is $3,000 (it is not stated if that is in US or Singapore dollars) Five different types of foods will be used in the contest, including fishballs, premium otah and sotong head.

Earthtimes has an article about the contest.

The contest might result in a schedule conflict for Joey Chestnut, who has been announced as the co-star for Nacho Mountain. Principal photography for that movie has been scheduled for July 20 through July 27.

Competitive eating articles in July 2008 magazines

There are two short competitive eating articles in current magazine issues. I do not believe either article is online:

  1. Maxim has a mini profile of Joey Chestnut in the notes section at the start of the magazine
  2. National Geographic has an article about Coney Island which mentions Nathan’s hot dog contest

update Skinnyboy has a scan of the National Geographic article

Joey Chestnut prepares for Nathan’s at “Hooterpalooza”

Joey Chestnut has written an entry for his yardbarker blog about tuning up for the Nathan’s finals by competing in a hot dog eating contest held at Hooterpalooza last Tuesday in Fremont, California. Joey managed to eat 43 hot dogs in 8 minutes, which is greater than the winning total at all 10 minute qualifiers held this year. Joey reveals his feelings about Kobayashi in the second half of the blog entry.

Youtube videos of the contest are available: Part 1, Part 2

There is an interview video embedded in the comments.

IMDB: Joey Chestnut to star in “Nacho Mountain”

The blog for Penn Live has an entry about the movie “Nacho Mountain”. Filming locations are currently being scouted in the Lehigh Valley. The film’s IMDB page lists Joey Chestnut, who will be performing as himself, as one of the stars. The release year is projected as 2009. Producer Dan Maher gives the following description of the plot:

He describes it as a quirky comedy about a fellow named Keefer who starts an underground food-eating competition. “When the town’s health-crazed mayor threatens to shut the tournament down, Keefer and his buddies fight to keep the contests going,” Maher explains.

A PG-13 rated teaser (probably NSFW) is available on youtube and a page for the movie has the following casting call:

NOW ACCEPTING HEADSHOTS AND PICTURES OF ANYBODY IN LEHIGH VALLEY WANTING TO PLAY EXTRAS, OR FILL CHARACTER ROLES! PLUS SIZES ARE GOOD, OBESE IS GREAT. ANy deformities (missing limbs, little people, etc.) are guaranteed screen time.

A craigslist posting has additional job information and says that principal photography will take place from July 21 to 27.

update The star of the movie, Jay Larson, has a page on ComedyCentral.com

A movie poster can be seen on the movie’s myspace page

The lead female role has yet to be cast

Yardbarker blog entry about asparagus contest

Joey Chestnut has written an entry for his yardbarker blog about last Saturday’s contest at the Asparagus Festival in Stockton, CA. Joey is disappointed with his training and focus compared to 2007. He closes the entry with his thoughts on the official results:

In the end of this contest, I was given credit for eating 8.9 lbs of fried asparagus (I think I only ate about 8.3 lbs., and Pat was close behind). People that are new to Competitive Eating will learn that sometimes the numbers do not exactly add up, but it is rare for the actual placing to get screwed up. Pat did great and he would have edged me out, if there weren’t so many people pushing me to win in this contest. I don’t know if the video shows it, but I could feel myself respond to the cheers from the audience.

Pat is a great eater and whenever I get lazy he pulls off an upset. The chances of Pat walking away with a win in this contest are slim to none. I will let you all know how the contest goes down.
