A pastrami eating contest at Tommy Pastrami in Huntington Beach, CA on January 30 will award $500 to the winner. Qualifiers will be held at six southern California locations on January 13.
Ballpark Pizza in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA awards $100 to a team of two men or three women that can finish an extra large pizza in under an hour. This is the only challenge that I am aware of that has different team sizes for men and women.

Johnnie Excel sets two eating challenge records

The facebook for Johnnie Excel announces that he set two challenge records this weekend. He finished the Iron Man challenge omelet at the Broken Yolk in 13 minutes and ate 60 plates of sushi at Sushilicious.

Stephanie Torres was not allowed to attempt to break the women’s record since only one record attempt per day is allowed at Sushilicious. She will attempt the record on Wednesday and finished a 5 pound burrito in 14 minutes at La Casa Garcia in Anaheim as a replacement challenge.

The facebook page for Sushilicious in Irvine, CA announces that Jackie Batand recently set the women's house record by eating 20 plates. Stanley Luong holds the men's record of 28 plates. update Oct 18 The time limit is one hour for the challenge update Oct 19 Kirk Barnard now holds the men's record of 38 plates.

Tom Gilbert defeats Furious Pete in OT at Derby Deli contest

update OC Register reports that Tom Gilbert won the contest with a total of 34.5 hot dogs. Gilbert and “Furious” Pete Czerwinski were tied at 29.5 at the end of regulation and the contest went into overtime. Joseph Barleta from Laguna Beach was third with 20 hot dogs.

Furious Pete Czerwinski claims that he and Gilbert had an agreement to split the sum of the first and second prize money before the overtime started.

The Derby Deli facebook has posted some pictures from today’s West Coast hot dog eating contest, but has not announced a winner. update A constest judge reports the winner ate 34.

"Furious" Pete Czerwinski and Dale Boone are expected to challenge defending champion Tom Gilbert. Derby owner Dan Lauriano says he wants to make the contest "the pure version of what Nathan's used to be like... not hokey with the drama".
