2012-13 college football bowl eating contests

Several college football bowls held eating contests as part of their pre-game activities:

  • Rose Bowl (Pasadena, CA) Wisconsin defended their Lawry’s Beef Bowl title by eating a total of 619 pounds of prime rib to defeat Stanford by 17 pounds. Joshua Garnett and Dallas Lewallen of Wisconsin were reportedly the individual winners with 7 24-ounce steaks eaten.
  • Chick-fil-A Bowl (Atlanta) LSU outate Clemson at Sal Grosso’s Brazillian Steakhouse by 624 pounds to 454
  • Music City Bowl (Nashville) NC State outate Vanderbilt by 19 ribs. NC State’s Rogers Clark ate 21 ribs in 2 minutes to win the individual contest.
  • Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl (Tempe, AZ) Michigan State ate an average of 33 wings per player to defeat TCU by a margin of 13. MSU’s Shawn Kamm was the individual winner with 65 wings.
  • Outback Bowl (Tampa) Ashton Tate of South Carolina ate 8 mini key lime pies to defeat Michigan’s Ben Braden by 3 pies.

Motor Trend Auto Shows reports that Dale Boone won the finals of the Noshville hot dog eating contest held at the Nashville International Auto Show with a total of 21 hot dogs in 4:50.

Two new pizza challenges have significant prizes. Village Pizza in Hartsville, TN will award $500 to a team of two people that can finish its 30 inch challenge. Sam's NY Pizza will award $200 and a Bahamas cruise for two to a person that can finish its 28 inch pizza.
The Music City Festival in Nashville will hold a wing eating contest on August 25 awarding a Big Green Egg Smoker with a listed value of $1,000. Qualifiers will be held at Nashville area Hooters on Wednesdays.
Dale Boone won a hot dog eating contest held in Columubs, GA on Saturday and a burger eating contest held in Nashville, TN on Sunday.

According to TotalVibration Man vs. Food: Nation is recording at the Pancake Pantry in Nashville today. The next site is reportedly Prince's Hot Chicken. update Nashville Scene has a report on yesterday's recording at Rooster's Texas-Style BBQ and Steakhouse where the 72 ounce steak challenge was attempted by two country singers.
Nashville Scene notices a Craigslist request for three unpaid interns to assist in the recording of Man v. Food in Nashville this week.
TarHeelFootball reports players from the University of North Carolina football team defeated players from the University of Tennessee in the Music City Bowl pre-game rib eating contest 58 ribs to 55. Quinton Alton of UNC was the individual winner with 21 ribs in 2 minutes.

A website about Piranha's (of Nashville, TN) 10 pound cheesesteak sandwich challenge has been set up at http://www.piranhas10lbcheesesteak.com/. There have been three finishers according to the website.
The facebook for Around the Way Dog (Nashville area) reports that Dale Boone was the first to finish their #33 Challenge consisting of 3 pounds of hot dogs and 3 pounds of fries. The website for Paventi's Pizza has also been updated to show that Dale Boone was the first to complete its 32 inch pizza.

The Krystal Square Off blog has a previews of Saturday's qualifer in Nashville and Sunday's qualifier in Knoxville listing confirmed and possible entrants.
The KSO blog lists the ranked eaters expected for this weekend's qualifiers in Nashville and Knoxville.
The Nashville Scene reports that Crazy Legs Conti will compete in Saturday's Krystal qualifier in Nashville. No other competitors are mentioned.
The Leaf Chronicle has an article about the Five Star General challenge at Cheeseburger Charlie's in Clarksville, Tennessee. Diners who complete the challenge will receive access to a private dining room.

Juliet wins Nashville qualifier after 3 way OT

The Krystal Square Off twitter reports that Juliet Lee won the Nashville qualifier after a 10 burger was held between her, Badlands Booker and Juris Shibayama. The official amount eaten in regulation time has not been posted yet.

IFOCE.com reports
that there was a lot of controversy over the results and possible new rules might be implemented:

Juliet Lee maintained a five second dunk throughout regulation but pre-chewed so aggressively the judges had difficulty determining her final count. Many fans and eaters alike questioned the outcome. Judges determined that the eat off should occur.

Major League Eating has announced it will hold an an impromptu conference call this evening to consider the adoption of a new rule to eliminate confusion in future contests.

update The official amount in regulation time is 51 burgers, which puts Juris Shibayama and Badlands Booker in the top 3 wild card positions.

September 13 IFOCE contest previews

The Shreveport Times has an article about the grits eating contest to be held at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, LA. Joey Chestnut, Pat Bertoletti and Tim Janus are listed as expected entrants. The article does not mention the possibility of the contest being cancelled due to hurricane Ike.
