SSNN on Kobayashi confusion

The Totally Serious Sports News Network has an article about Cleveland Indians pitcher Masahide Kobayashi being mistaken for someone else with that surname:

Needless to say, Kobayashi is already questioning whether signing with Cleveland was the best thing for him.

“Seriously, the fact that no one knew Kobayashi is a common Japanese name is kind of offensive,” he said. “It’s amazing to me that a team called the ‘Indians’ can be so racially insensitive.”

Eating challenges offering cash rewards

Competitive Eating segment in Louisville play

Liz Gilbert, two time winner of the women’s division in Pete’s Grill pancake eating contest, has graduated from Johns Hopkins and is acting in a play called “Game On” this weekend:

Last fall the playwrights met with the apprentices and talked with them about the play’s sports theme. In those discussions, the writers discovered certain ideas and talents that they incorporated into the piece. For example, actor Elizabeth Gilbert, a two-time pancake-eating champion of Baltimore, inspired a segment about competitive eating. Apprentice Bing Putney’s ability to jump tall objects was included in scenes involving lacrosse players.

Giant NJ deli sandwich in NY Times

28turn03.jpg

(From Save The Deli) The New York Times has an article and slideshow about restaurants near the exits of the New Jersey Turnpike. Harold’s New York Deli in Edison, NJ was visited near exit 10:

Harold Jaffee cut his teeth as general manager at the Carnegie Deli in Manhattan, where the sandwiches are big enough. But there’s something about New Jersey that made him want to do things bigger.

At Harold’s New York Deli, in a Holiday Inn just a kreplach’s toss from Exit 10, Mr. Jaffee serves a 26-ounce pastrami sandwich, two little triangles of bread teetering like a farce atop twin peaks of meat. The house-cured pastrami is soft, warm and mildly spiced. You can feed a carload on it, supplemented by slices of rye and half sours from the “world’s largest pickle bar.”

The 26 ounce sandwich is not the largest item on the menu; triple decker sandwiches are available.

Angelo Cataldi wants amateur only Wing Bowl 17

In a blog entry from February 18, Angelo Cataldi responds to a request to have a Delaware Valley residency requirement for the 2009 Wing Bowl with another proposed restriction:

Our thought right now – 11 months away from the next Wing Bowl – is to have an event that is strictly for amateurs in 2009. Anyone who is or has been associated with a professional-eating organization would be ineligible. I hope – if we can get this plan approved – that it will address many of the concerns about the competition in Wing Bowl 17.
