LancasterOnline.com did an article about Sonya Thomas to preview the Shoo Fly Pie contest.
Though Thomas prefers salads and sushi, most days she has to eat on the job. She often avoids her favorite Korean restaurants, where too many fans recognize her.
“When I go eat, I don’t like the people bothering me,” she says. “When I eat, I want to enjoy my food.”
Thomas starts her day with coffee. After the lunch rush, she grabs a crispy chicken sandwich — hold the mayo — chicken tenders and king-sized french fries, washing it down with three or four king-sized Diet Cokes.
“Every day (it’s) the same food,” she says of the approximately 1,900-calorie midday meal. “It never changes.”

In his most recent blog entry, Kobayashi reports that he is suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder (which is translated from Japanese as gnathal arthropathy), making opening his mouth difficult (automatically translated):
As for the gnathal arthropathy for the food fighter, if you refer to the baseball, kind of those where the pitcher breaks down the elbow.
Speaking honestly, the finishing the fact that it makes cure almost is desperate circumstance to the conference July 4th.
Say, not to be story of the conference of Nathan’s, the serious problem which relates to also future activity.
It is the fatal wound.
In order to cure, repose and long-term remedy are necessary.

Tim Brown did an interview with the Boothbay Register on a trip back to his father’s restaurant in Maine.
Brown says that this is the first year that he has taken competitive eating seriously. He is now in training for the primo event of competitive eating, Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Championship on the 4 th of July in Coney Island. “Right now, I’ve been on the circuit trying to qualify for Nathan’s. It’s like the Super Bowl of competitive eating. There’s no prize money, but it’s the one event every year that everyone tries to get into,” says Brown. Brown has been traveling the qualifying circuit for Nathan’s and thinks he is likely to get into the competition as a wildcard entry. To prepare himself, each morning and evening, he drinks a gallon of water as fast as he can, usually under five minutes. A couple of times a week he will go to a buffet. He shovels downs 10 pounds of zucchini or tofu. Brown also runs five miles a day, six days a week. Despite all this hard work, progress is slow. A year ago Brown could down 21 hot dogs, now he is up to 25.

A letter to the Brooklyn Paper disputes Gersh Kuntzman’s assertion that Joey Chestnut’s mark of 59.5 received assistance from the Arizona Mills air conditioning:
Gersh is spreading lies — like the one that air-conditioning has a major effect on competitive eaters. It’s false! These eaters have been training — and air conditioning, let me assure you, is not a big factor.
Capacity is the only issue, and air conditioning does not change that.
