The leftwing British newspaper The Guardian has a review of Horsemen of the Esophagus, which has been retitled Insatiable for the European version. ( It is actually more a critique of Jason Fagone’s failure to adopt the reviewer’s opinion on competitive eating than it is of the book itself).
A hands-free tofu eating contest will be held at the Tofu Festival in downtown Los Angeles on August 12. The winner will receive an 11 night tour of Asia.
I have been trying to track down information about Kobayashi’s Japanese losses to disprove the claim in the Nathan’s telecast that he has only lost to a bear. The Record Mansion seems to be the best list of results of Japanese contests and it claims that Kobayashi lost three of the four Food Battle Clubs held in 2001 and 2002, all to Nobuyuki “The Giant” Shirota.
Larry “The Legend” McNeil has updated his rankings on his myspace blog. These rankings will probably be quite controversial for some people. It is difficult to see how Dale Boone can be ranked ahead of Pat Bertoletti after taking the results of the Atlanta Zoo qualifier into account.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Dale Boone won Frank’s RedHot Battle to the Bone wing eating contest in Atlanta Saturday by eating 30 wings in 4 minutes. Boone’s victory came a day after he placed third in a rib eating contest at Harrah’s casino in Cherokee, NC.
The Courier News has a short article and some pictures from yesterday’s QuickChek Italian Sub Eating Qualifier at Bridgewater, NJ won by “King” George Van Laar.
A documentary about Fino “Chili Dawg” Cachola at Wing Bowl X in 2002 has been uploaded to youtube. The film shows the challenges a Wing Bowl hopeful faces as Chili Dawg attempts to improve his third place finish in Wing Bowl IX. The program lasts about an hour and merits a PG rating, so it is not suitable for all workplaces. Don “Moses” Lerman and “Krazy” Kevin Lipsitz have cameos.
Part 1 – Introduction Part 2 – Qualifying stunt – two chickens & mashed potatos Part 3 – Training Part 4 – Weigh In Part 5 – Pre Contest Part 6 – First Round Part 7 – Conclusion
Part 1 hung up on me on two computers so the video file might be corrupt. Parts 2-7 work fine.
Chili Dawg died on December 26, 2004 after qualifying for Wing Bowl XIII. His qualifying stunt is described in Horsemen of the Esophagus and his death is one of the more compelling segments of that book. The documentary provides a lasting tribute to Chili Dawg’s enthusiasm and fighting spirit.
The website for the Krystal Square Off has been updated with information about the 2006 contest. The finals will take place on October 28, earlier than in previous years. The qualifier schedule will apparently be released on July 18.
The Salem Statesman Journal has a preview of this weekends rib eating contest that will be held at the Chinook Winds casino in Lincoln City Oregon. Joey Chestnut, Erik Denmark and Scott Sayer are expected to attend.
An SexyFeast blog entry from January claims that Kate Stelnick finished the 12.5 pound Zeus burger from the Clinton Station Diner. Since I have not located any information that Kate has done any challenges outside Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub, I am assuming that the author saw the picture of Kate with the Zeus burger from the May 2005 AICE Zeus contest, in which Kate served as an honorary official and not a contestant, and jumped to the conclusion that she completed the burger. A Steakbellie blog entry from February says that the diner told him that no one had finished the burger in the three hour limit. Of course, both blog entries could be correct if Kate needed more than three hours.
The blog entry has an accompanying podcast, but no information about Kate’s potential feat can be found in it.
Now that the ribs results have been posted, I have changed the poll to whether you believe Kobayashi should have been disqualified in last week’s Nathan’s finals. Megamunch and True Fan have a lot more information on the possible grounds for disqualification that this site does.

The Times of London has a column about the lack of success by eaters from the United Kingdom.
Obviously, cultural objections to competitive eating might include the fact that it is vulgar, mindless, upsetting to watch and, in a world in which people are starving, morally obscene. You could say the same about Formula One, though, and that still has its UK-based participants.
The Sheboygan Press reports that ESPN will broadcast the finals of the Johnsonville Bratwurst contest on August 5 at 4 pm Eastern. Kobayashi will compete in the contest. Press Release
It has been over a week since the July 3 goldenpalace.net BBQ ribs contest in Memphis won by Dale Boone and results for that event have yet to be posted on the IFOCE website. The new poll question asks what you believe the reason for this delay is.
From TV in Japan A clip of Natsuko “Gal” Sone eating a huge hunk of meat and then an Everest of ice cream has been uploaded to youtube. The total amount of calories in the consumed food is listed at 40,000. The courses take place in different restaurants.
Updated 7/13 12:26 – The ice cream mountain is apparently a regular menu item that retails for 20,000 Yen.
The Boston Globe has a preview of the Italian Sauage Eating contest in East Boston, MA and the Battle Creek Enquirer has a preview of the Reuben Sandwich Eating contest in Marshall, MI. Both contests will take place on Saturday. The Italian Sausage contest will be held at the Italia Unita Festival, so wearing a Zinadine Zidane jersey is not recommended.
