Dragon Boat Festival dumpling purse almost doubled from 2005

(From AICE news) The purse of the Chinese dumpling contest to be held at the Dragon Boat Festival in Queens August 13 has almost doubled from last year. Prizes will increase to $1000, $500 and $300 from $500, $300 and $200. Prizes will be awarded for both men’s and women’s divisions. The women’s contest purse of $1800 is probably larger than the purse for all other American women’s only eating contests combined. Registration ends August 7.

1 year blog anniversary and upcoming rebranding

Today marks the one year anniversary of the blog. Thanks for all your contributions and comments (well thanks for most of the comments)

I have decided to move the blog to eatfeats.com and integrate the blog with the database currently hosted at that URL unless there is overwhelming demand for the blog to stay at trencherwomen. The focus of the blog has gradually shifted from female competitive eaters to competitive eating in general and it is time that the domain name reflected that (and the fact that a sizeable portion of the population does not know what a trencher(wo)man is probably has not helped things).

I will set trencherwomen to automatically redirect to eatfeats when I have the database intregation complete which I hope will be by July 25, which is the anniversary of the date trencherwomen.com was pointed to the blog. After the search engines have indexed the new URL in a month or two, I will stop the automatic redirection and restore the original focus of trencherwomen by syndicating the blog entries dealing with female competitive eaters on it.

Pat from Moonachie videos on youtube

(from beautifulbrian.com) Youtube has 8 videos of Pat “from Moonachie” Philbin on the Opie & Anthony show, including 3 of his attempt at eating 100 hard boiled eggs while walking the streets of New York City this week. He apparently gets to 97, but regurgitates so his mark will not supplant Sonya Thomas’ record.

2005 Frank’s Red Hot beach volleyball wing contest results

I have recently come across the results for the four Frank’s Red Hot wing eating contests held in conjunction with beach volleyball contests held in the summer of 2005. Two of the winners were females, making them the only females I am aware of besides Sonya and Carlene to win a coed contest.

Amy Walter of Hillsborough, NJ won the Belmar, NJ contest. Her total of over 3 lbs is almost twice as much as any other winner, but the contest durations are not listed so it could have lasted longer. Kate Stelnick appears to have company among college age female Garden Staters who had one impressive debut in 2005 and have apparently done no eating competitions since that time.

Speedeat.com says Joe Menchetti appeared on ESPN2’s Cold Pizza to promote the Belmar contest, but it does not list the results or indicate if he competed in that contest on his web page.

The other female winner, Ann Steele, is from Arlington, VA, so Sonya is not the only Northern VA woman to have won a contest. Ms. Steele did an interview for a local newspaper after her victory.

Gal Sone video – 0.2 view per calorie

The youtube video of Natsuko “Gal” Sone eating 40K calories has been viewed over 200,000 times. A lot of cable television programs do not have 200,000 viewers. (The Gluttonous Queens video, which has been available for three months, has only been viewed about 10,000 times) I am curious whether the majority of the viewers are coming from Japan or the US. Hopefully “Gal” Sone’s popularity will result in her competing with American eaters in the not too distant future.

NYC dumpling contest to offer $1K men’s & women’s purses

(from AICE news) There will be a Chinese dumpling eating contest at the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens on August 13. Women’s and men’s purses of $1,000 ($500 1st, $300 2nd, $200 3rd) will be offered. Last year’s female second place ate only about 11 dumplings in two minutes (the female winner, Floria Lee, almost tied the male runners up), so Gothamite trencherwomen interested in winning $300 might want to check this event out.

Request for “Trenchy” nominations & categories

With the close of the “eating season” I thought it would be appropriate to honor eaters and events from the period July 5, 2005 to July 4, 2006 by having the “Trenchy” awards. My list of nominations is available after the jump, but I am sure I skipped some obvious ones, so please submit your nominations in emails or comments. The nominations period will last about a week and then the awards will be voted on in the polls section of this website.

I do not have categories for best male & female eater of the year, because I believe that it is obvious that the winners of those awards would be Kobayashi and Sonya Thomas and I do not want to run the risk of ballot stuffing.

Feel free to suggest additional categories, but I am not going to do negative awards or categories I believe will be too contentious like best looking or best liked.

There will be no monetory or tangible award for the winners and I reserve the right to drop the idea completely if I think it will cause too many problems.

Categories & nominations are available after the jump

Updated 7/20 12:24 am
Thanks for your nominations & suggestions. Please do not email me your votes, I will use the polling mechanism of the blog once the nominations have been finalized. I have heard that some people have difficulty voting in the polls, please inform me if that is the case for you.

I do not want to have categories which I think are too subjective and will cause too much arguing, like favorite eater. I have to include favorite eater website in that group because of the ballot stuffing that occured when that was a poll question.

Event nominees must have occured between July 5, 2005 and July 4, 2006. (“Airline” was broadcast in May 2005)

Krystal Square Off qualifiers announced

The 2006 Krystal Square Off qualifiers were announced today. Eight qualifiers will be held:

Aug. 24 – 27 Chattanooga, Tenn.
Sept. 1 – 4 Jacksonville, Fla.
Sept. 8 – 10 Nashville, Tenn.
Sept. 15 – 17 Knoxville, Tenn.
Sept. 21 – 24 Atlanta, Ga.
Sept. 29 – Oct. 1 Memphis, Tenn.
Oct. 5 – 8 Perry, Ga.
Oct. 13 – 15 Jackson, Miss.

Oct 28 Finals Chattanooga, TN – will be televised on ESPN2

The purse is $30,000, probably the largest ever for an American eating contest, with a $10K first place prize. Prizes are listed down to 13th place, so they will probably be at least 4 wild card qualifiers after taking into account Kobayashi and the 8 qualifier winners. With finals prizes down to last place, it is unlikely we will see a one burger performance on October 28.

Joey Chestnut appeared at the press conference announcing the qualifiers and ate a record 28 burgers in 2 minutes

Updated 10:28 pm
A youtube video and flickr gallery of the exhibition by Brad is available

Gluttonous Queens past and present

A clip of last Wednesday’s weekly eating contest between Natsuko “Gal” Sone and Nobuyuki “the Giant” Shirota has been uploaded to youtube. The challenge is to eat 6 kilograms of curry in under 15 minutes.

The blog of the restaurant where the challenge was held has an entry about the contest.

A youtube clip of some of Takako Akasaka’s contests is also available on youtube. She competes against a champion German eater in consuming 6 meters of frankfurters in Berlin and has another 6m sausage contest against Misao Fujita. She also participates in a wedding cake eating contest wearing a wedding dress.

This blog entry from April 2005 has an interesting comparison between Food Battle Club and TV Tokyo’s oogui programming.
