Don “Moses” Lerman has called for a rib eating battle of the old school eaters (debut before 2003) versus the young guns in his blog at Big Ed’s Barbecue in New Jersey. It is hoped that the contest will be held in conjunction with a New York area contest to make it easier for competitors living outside the Northeast to come. Bob Shoudt, Kevin Lipsitz and Brian Seiken have announced interest in competing.
The period in which the first round contests of Moe’s Burritos for Life will be held is about over. Several articles have been written about the contests:
Alligator (U of Florida) Daily
Capital News 9 (NY) also video
Huntsville (AL) Times
Vail (CO) daily
The Daily Record’s article about the NJ Balloon Festival gives two different dates for the Quick Chek Italian Sub eating contest, the correct date of July 29 in the sidebar and an incorrect date of July 30 in the body of the article. The Courier Post has basically the same article, but it does not have an incorrect date.
Jason Fagone is the guest blogger for Powell’s Books of Portland and he has posted a segment about an imprisoned competitive eater that was excised from the published version of Horsemen of the Esophagus
Fagone has also posted his top nine cities in the world for competitive eating. Other cities/regions that a case could be made for include the Bay Area, CA (home of Joey Chestnut, Eddie “Bozo” Miller & original home of the LeFevres), Long Island (if considered separate from NYC), Amarillo, TX and Clearfield, PA.
Krystal announces that registration for the 8 Krystal Square Off III qualifiers opens today. A limited amount of byes to the qualifer finals are available by registering on the IFOCE website. Eaters who register in person or after all the byes are claimed will have to enter a two-minute pre-qualifier. There will be four wild cards for the finals.
The New York Times has an article about “activist investor/corporate raider” Nelson Peltz’s clashes with the management of Heinz. Peltz wants to market more actively than the current board of directors does:
Mr. Peltz also wants Heinz to spend more on advertising to try to help increase the market for ketchup instead of paying money to retailers for shelf placement, which he says reduces the company’s margins. As an example of how Heinz might be more skilled with its marketing, he excitedly described how there was no sponsor besides Nathan’s for the World Championship Hot Dog Eating Contest and how Heinz missed out on a big opportunity.
“Where was the condiments sponsor?’’ he asked. “For $200,000 Heinz could have had their name all over the place, but that’s not their way.â€
I have moved the blog to eatfeats.com. All existing bookmarks and URLs should automatically redirect. Please let me know if you experience any problems.
(From slashfood.com) Dale Boone was apparently not exaggerating when he described the great competitive eaters of South Asia. This article in the Hindustan Time tells about the gastronomic exploits of a man known as “Theeta” of Thrissur, India, who once ate 10kg of halwa in 10 minutes. The police have been called several times to evict “Theeta” from a buffet. Doctors have forced “Theeta” to curtail his eating following a hospitalization, so restaurants are now free to restart their all you can eat specials.
In the process of moving this blog to eatfeats.com, I have changed the database URL to http://eatfeats.com/query.php.
The new poll asks what you believe is the second most prestigious eating contest in the United States behind Nathan’s.
Happy birthday to the greatest female competitive eater in history. (Birthday obtained from “Eat This Book”)
This website was down from 1am to 2am eastern. My hosting provider has been having a lot of downtime recently and I will have to move to a new one if things do not improve soon. If you have experienced difficulty accessing this site in the past month, the problem probably lies with the web server and not your internet connection.
The episode of Cheap Seats in which the Sklar brothers provide commentary on the 2004 Nathan’s hot dog eating contest will be rerun tonight at 11:30 pm and 2:30 am eastern (8:30 and 11:30 pm west coast)
The Baltimore Sun has an article about last weekend’s episode of the NPR quiz show Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me which lists the questions and multiple choice answers for the competitive eating questions asked on that program. One of the answer choices should have been “a black bear and Nobuyuki “the Giant” Shirota”.
(From Brian Seiken) The updated IFOCE rankings are available, with retired and inactive eaters removed from the list. Dale Boone has also been omitted, probably due his being suspended.

Update 7/26 2:15 am
Erik Denmark and Jason Erb have uploaded their videos (Jason Erb’s video is about 30 MB)
Sports Illustrated NFL writer Peter King trashes Nathan’s hot dog eating contest in his blog-type column this week. The commenters on this Football Outsiders forum thread generally disagree with King’s opinion:
If Peter King really cares about the malnourished kids in Coney Island, he should be campaigning for the NFL to save the lavish free buffets for the press that have him at a solid 200+ and he can walk around the town giving out box lunches. Otherwise he should shut the **** up.
Erik “the Red” Denmark has posted some pictures and a longer writeup of the Chinook Winds ribs contest held July 16. He hopes to post a video of the contest soon.
