The BBC has an article about spicy food challenges titled "Why hot chillies might be good for us" which theorizes that plant spiciness evolved to discourage mammals from eating them so birds could spread their seeds. A television program about the subject will be broadcast today.

QZ.com has an article about Tarrare, born in 1772 in Lyon, France.

By the time he was 17, he was reportedly 100 pounds (about 45 kg), and consumed a quarter of a cow’s worth of beef per day. He ran away from home and joined a freak show, where he delighted attendees by eating anything—literally anything—they gave him, which ranged from a basket of apples, dozens of eggs, and even wine corks and flints.

Emma Dalton will appear on the British TV channel ITV at 8pm tonight on the Kyle Files. The topic of the program is Britain's obesity crisis. Emma also has a video of her eating 120 pancakes, which she thinks is a world record and has started an instagram at emmadalton2837. update The Sun and Daily Star have articles.

Atlas Obscura on the Great Eater of Kent

Atlas Obscura has a post about Nicholas Wood, known as “The Great Eater of Kent”, titled “Competitive Eating Was Even More Disgusting in the 17th Century”

Taylor’s plan would have had Wood perform daily feats of overeating at the city’s Bear Gardens, which at the time hosted animal fights. Among the suggested meals to give the “most exorbitant paunchmonger” were a wheelbarrow full of tripe, as many puddings as would stretch across the Thames, and an entire fat calf or sheep.

For better or worse, this gluttony exhibition never came to pass, as Wood, who was getting on in his years, and who had lost all but one of his teeth after eating an entire mutton shoulder, bones and all, declined Taylor’s offer, saying that he wasn’t sure he’d be able to perform to expectations.

The competitive eating scene at a French restaurant in the James Bond parody Tremor of Intent by Anthony Burgess was named one of the top five food scenes in British literature by Paste Magazine. The list claims the scene was similar to a crab eating feast in the book Goldfinger (which did not appear in the movie.)

TV Tokyo has a page about Battle of the Big Eaters 4 that will be televised on New Years Day with pictures of all 4 competing quartets. Team Canada and Australian pro wrestler Shazza Mackenzie do not appear.

Martin Appleton-Clare ate a meat and potato pie in 45.5 seconds at Harry's Bar in Wigan, England yesterday to defend his title in the "World Pie Eating Championships". This is his third victory overall. Vocativ has a video of a pie ascending 19 miles high via weather balloon to promote the contest.

The BBC reports that a pie that ascended to 100,000 feet after being attached to a weather balloon will be used in The World Pie Eating Championships in Wigan, England on December 20. The goal of the flight was to determine how high altitude affects the molecular structure of the pie and makes it easier to eat.
