NY Times on Jersey “beefsteaks”

The New York Times has an article about “beefsteaks”, which refers to an event and not a type of food in northern New Jersey:

About 350 men, seated shoulder to shoulder at long tables, were devouring slices of beef tenderloin and washing them down with pitchers of beer. As waiters brought trays of meat, the guests reached over and harvested the pink slices with their bare hands, popping them down the hatch.

Each slice was perched on a round of Italian bread, but most of the men ate only the meat and stacked the bread slices in front of them, tallying their gluttony like poker players amassing chips. Laughter and uproarious conversation were in abundance; subtlety was not.

As anyone in northern New Jersey could tell you, this was a beefsteak.

Troubles at the Tropicana casino

A meatball eating contest was held at the Tropicana casino in Atlantic City the previous three Decembers. An article in nj.com reports on some of the issues facing that establishment which might have resulted in the contest not being renewed in 2007:

In a rare move, the state’s top casino prosecutor yesterday asked the Casino Control Commission to renew Tropicana’s license for one year — instead of the typical five — and impose seven-pages of restrictions to a gambling parlor that has grabbed headlines for its massive layoffs and patron complaints of vermin, unsanitary conditions and lousy service.

The casino was sold to a new owner, William Yung, early this year and has experienced a 10% drop in revenue.

GJoe wins Bubba Dogs contest

The website for Bubba Dogs reports on the hot dog eating contest it held Saturday:

Well, it was a great day. We ended up with 10 contestants on Saturday and had a phenomenal time. Most importantly, we raised $2000 for the Fallen Heroes Fund. The winner was Gentleman Joe Menchetti who gobbled 18 hot dogs in 12 minutes. It seems that Joe was taking it easy as he knew he had it in the bag. Below are the pix from the day (click on them for larger view). The weather cooperated and we ended up moving from the promenade at JFK to the La Costa complex parking lot. This proved to be the right move as most of the festivities were taking place in this area anyway.
