The 2010 Princeton Oyster Bowl will take place on February 7, 2010 (Super Bowl Sunday) and award a trip for two to Punta Cana or Cancun. (I have not seen any news about the 2010 Wing Bowl; Angelo Cataldi has not updated his blog in almost two months.)

New baseball burger challenges

BottomLineSox announces that the 1 pound 9 ounce McGreevy’s Beckett Burger will debut at McGreevy’s this afternoon. Josh Beckett will be present at the restaurant until 3 pm today and award Red Sox tickets. The burger weight was selected to honor of Josh Beckett’s #19 uniform number. The burger price is $30 and a portion of the cost will go to the Josh Beckett Foundation. All purchasers will receive one of two T shirts which will announce whether they succeeded or failed in the challenge.

The Trenton Thunder have also started the Thunder Burger Challenge which consists of three grilled cheese sandwiches separated by half pound burger patties. The burger is free if it is finished in under 30 minutes and all finishers will be invited to a contest on August 28. (Will this bring central New Jersey’s most famous burger eater out of retirement?)

No Oyster Bowl threepeat for Kristina Costa

The blog for the Princeton Oyster Bowl reports that two time defending champion Kristina Costa will not be able to defend her crown because she will be in South Africa during the contest. The website claims that the current favorites are 2005 winner Roy Cherris and Barbara Devaney, who lost to Kristina Costa in overtime in 2006. Last year’s first prize was a 42 inch plasma TV, this year’s prize has not been listed.

MTV’s True Life inspires Princeton charity hot dog contest

In this article about a hot dog contest at Princeton University, the organizer of the contest says he was inspired by MTV’s True Life episode about competitive eating. The contest raised $6,539 for charity and each competitor took pledges for donated amounts for hot dogs eaten. Ruben Pope won with 16 hot dogs in 15 minutes.

Princeton U hot dog eating contest and column

The Princeton University student newspaper has a pro competitive eating column which promotes a hot dog eating contest to be held May 2. The column does not mention Kate Stelnick, the Princeton region’s most famous competitive eater, or the June 23 Nathan’s qualifier in greater Princeton (Molly Pitcher Travel Plaza) in which Charles Hardy Jr. will make his debut.

New Kate Stelnick Interview

Kate Stelnick’s student newspaper has an article in which she describes the aftermath of eating Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub 11 pound burger in January. This is the first article about Kate that I have been able to find since February. Like all the previous articles, no details are offered about what made Kate so certain she could finish the burger (are 5/7/9? pound meals commonplace for her?). She feels that society has made too big a deal about her accomplishment (the same could also be said for driving several hundred times around a racetrack, slapping a ball over a fence, or nearly everything else considered a big-time sport.) While her feat is certainly not on the level of curing cancer, it did offer a glimpse into what humans are capable of achieving (and also deflated some male chauvinists’ egos in the process).
