The Butler blogged it
Todd “The Butler” Yeates, who competed in the Arizona Fry Bread contest and the Posole contest, has started a blog at http://toddthebutleryeates.blogspot.com/ with galleries of those two contests.
Accurate posole results
The Cibola Beacon has an article about the posole contest with a different list of results than can be found on IFOCE.com:
World Posole Eating Championships
1st Place – Pat Bertoletti $1000 – 9lbs, 2.25 oz
2nd Place – Tim Janus $500 – 8lbs, 10.75 oz
3rd Place – Rich Lafevre $350 – 8lbs, 8 oz
4th Place – Erik Denmark $250 – 7lbs, 5 oz
5th Place – Marco Marquez $150
I am rather disappointed at being lied to and made a fool of and this will probably affect the future direction of eatfeats. 🙁 Thanks to the people who alerted me that something was fishy this morning.
Helen “Hoax” Haggerty / Tim “Eater XX” Janus
There has been speculation that “Helen Haggerty”, listed as the runner-up in Saturday’s posole contest in New Mexico was a hoax given a lack of closeup pictures of her and any internet presence. Andrew Lane has posted a gallery of the contest with a picture of “Helen”. The picture in its original state is too dark to make out any facial features, but after playing with the brightness and contrast, the image on the left reveals “Helen” to clearly be Tim “Eater X” Janus.
I am quite upset by this incident and it will affect the future direction of eatfeats, but I am going to wait until I am better composed until I elaborate further.
Pat Bertoletti wins posole, rookie Helen Haggerty 2nd
From IFOCE com:
Sky City Posole contest results:
1. Pat Bertoletti, 146.25 oz.
2. Helen Haggerty, 138.75 oz., recent Bryn Mawr graduate
3. Rich LeFevre, 136 oz.
4. Erik “The Red” Denmark, 117 oz.
5. “Mongo” Marquez ?
6. William “Wild Bill” Myers
?. Andrew “Skinnyboy” Lane, almost 64 oz.
Ms. Haggerty’s performance is probably the most impressive debut for a woman in an IFOCE contest (and possibly the best performance by a newcomer for either gender) The only comparable female debut would be Sonya Thomas setting the American women’s record with 18 hot dogs at the Molly Pitcher travel plaza Nathan’s qualifier in 2003, but she did not defeat a top 10 and top 15 eater and almost beat the #3 ranked eater at that event.
All top 4 finishers beat Carlene LeFevre’s 2004 record of 109.75 oz., assuming the contests were the same length.
updatedAndrew Lane competed and has a brief blog entry. He will have a longer report later.
updated #2 miningjournal.net has an article about Matt “Foracious” Forss which claims he will in the posole contest.
Gallup Independent: Joey to do posole contest
The Gallup Independent has a preview of Saturday’s posole eating contest at the Sky City Casino in Acoma, NM. Joey Chestnut, Pat Bertoletti and Erik “the Red” Denmark are listed as expected entrants. The article says the contest might be recorded for Japanese television.
Slashfood post on LeFevres & posole
The slashfood food blog has an article about the efforts of the House of LeFevre to retain the posole title. The author has a different opinion on posole than his subjects do.
Posole contest expected entrants
Matt “Foracious” Forss, who will compete in the posole contest on November 18, has forwarded me some of the expected entrants in that event:
Pat Bertoletti
Joey Chestnut
Tim Janus
Matt “Foracious” Forss
Rich LeFevre will probably participate as well since he has done almost all southwestern contests.
Posole contest press release available
A press release previewing the posole contest at the Sky City Casino in Acoma NM on November 18 is now available. The release does not list any eaters expected to attend.
SC chicken strips canceled, NM posole contest added
(from “the Hangman” & “Wild Bill”) The ifoce schedule no longer lists the chicken strips contest that was to be held at the South Carolina State Fair on Friday, so it is safe to assume it will not take place. This denies Dale Boone an opportunity to see if his momentum continues from his Krystal win.
A posole eating contest will be held at the Sky City Casino in New Mexico on November 18. This is the second posole contest held at that site.
Golden Palace NM, NC contests canceled, SC in doubt
Andrew “Skinnyboy” Lane received a message from IFOCE headquarters:
I am extremely sad to announce that the breakfast burrito eating championship in Albuquerque on October 11, and the pickle eating championship in Raleigh on October 16 have been canceled. It is likely that the chicken strip contest in Columbia on October 13 will also be canceled, but that is not yet confirmed.
I would assume the AZ contest on the 28th is in serious jeopardy as well. If the SC and AZ contests are canceled, hopefully the jalapeno contest on Sunday will be a fitting end to the series.
updated from the Sicilan IFOCE.com has an official statement about the cancellations saying that the AZ contest will take place without any prizes. The jalapeno contest Sunday will be sponsored by Major League eating instead of golden palace.
Prince Charles’ stepson does NM chili eating contest
(from The Observer) Tom Parker Bowles, son of the wife of Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles, has a written a book called The Year of Eating Dangerously, which he describes as a “travel book about weird food”. The book describes his participating in a chili eating contest in New Mexico.

Green chile grilled cheese preview
This page on the New Mexico State Fair website is the only information I have been able to find about Saturday’s green chile grilled cheese contest. The $100K rookie grilled cheese challenge will be held as well. No expected competitors are listed. There will be three New Mexico IFOCE contests in about a month and a half.
