In February, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick believed he was traded to Japan for “Kobayashi Iwamura” before he learned the transaction was fake. Kendrick’s Wikipedia page says that the names of the fabricated player came from Takeru Kobayashi and infielder Akinori Iwamura of the Tampa Bay Rays, who are currently opposing the Phillies in the World Series. Kendrick did not pitch effectively enough in the regular season to make the post season roster.
The Taipei Times has sad news about a steamed bun eating contest:
An eating contest at a local university ended in tragedy on Wednesday when a graduate student died after participating in a steamed bun eating competition.
Huang Te-hsiang (黃德祥), dean of the student affairs office of Dayeh University in Changhua, said yesterday that a 23-year-old student, surnamed Chen, from the Graduate Institute of Bioindustry Technology could not stop vomiting and fell unconscious after he began to feel uncomfortable during the school’s eating competition on Wednesday.
update ETaiwanNews has more information. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
The Mouthpiece Sports blog has an interview with Brad Sciullo about his successful completion of the Belly Bruiser challenge. Brad finishes the interview in the following manner:
It’s opening some eyes. This is great for all competitive eaters. Everyone of us is going to benefit from this because this raises the bar. I’m guaranteeing you that from this day forward bigger numbers will be put up — numbers like no one’s ever seen. Things that make this look ridiculously easy because everyone’s going to realize that this is possible. That someone like myself — who isn’t as good as the top-ranked eaters — can do this this is going to send everyone into a frenzy. And it’s going to be great for the sport in general.
And what’s next:
I’m either going to go back to Denny’s and eat every one of their burgers on their menu in the same day, which will equal about what that burger weighed. I’ll eat the two-pounder, the three-pounder, and the Ye’ Olde 96er in the same day. Or I’m going to do a pizza competition.
Nic Fry noticed that the IFOCE rankings have been updated. The previous rankings are still available in the Google cache. The top 8 remain almost the same. Tim Janus and Bob Shoudt are now tied at #4 and Rich LeFevre and Hall Hunt flip-flop at #7/#8. Brad Sciullo is not ranked despite winning the cannoli contest, so speculation that he has been suspended for doing the Belly Bruiser challenge might be correct. Patrick Vandam jumps to #11 from #45 and Dave “US Male” Goldstein ascends to #28 from #44. Some other changes:
New: Mike Fitzgerald (#24), Nic Fry (#30), Mike Springer (#40), Andrew McKirdy(#44), Cameron McKirdy(#45), Scott Zukowski(#46), Mike Landrich (#50)
Returning: Eric Booker (#13), Ron Koch (#35)
Dropping Out: Chip Simpson(#9), Justin Mih (#22), Marco Marquez (#23), Pat Bruss (#24), Loren Yarbrough (#33), Andrew “Skinnyboy” Lane (#35), Pete Miernicki (#36), Jim Hamrick (#42), Kevin Carr (#43)

The BBC has an article and video about the creation of a 1500 meter long (.93 mile) sandwich in Tehran. The sandwich contained 1000 kg (2200 lbs.) of ostrich meat and was created to promote Iranian ostrich farming. Onlookers devoured the sandwich before it could be officially recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records, but the event organizers hope that video of the sandwich will result in it supplanting a 1378 meter long Italian ostrich sandwich in the official records.
FarsNews has a picture of Kobayashi in its article about the sandwich.
ESPNMediaZone has a press release about Tuesday’s E:60 that will be televised on ESPN at 7pm eastern which will have a segment about competitive eating:
In a sport replete with colorful personalities, E:60 correspondent Jeremy Schaap takes an in-depth look at competitive eating and addresses some of the sport’s salient health and social issues. Highlights include interviews with some of the greatest eaters in the world such as Takeru Kobayashi, Joey Chestnut, Juliet Lee, Crazy Legs Conti and Tim “Eater X” Janus.
Rich LeFevre reports in a comment that he successfully completed the 120 ounce steak challenge at the Brand Steakhouse in 40 minutes. The list price of the steak is $267. Video of his attempt will appear on rawvegas.tv.
update Some pictures have been emailed:

Its called “Pauls East Coast Pile”
The prize breakdown for the Famous Famiglia pizza contest listed the 7th place prize as $500. Pat Philbin came in seventh and said he received $250 on a forum thread. Does anyone have the final list of prizes?
The only mention of the Famous Famiglia contest results on IFOCE.com appears to be the listing of winner on the contest calendar page.

update Oct 2, 2009 A post about Brad Sciullo’s appearance on The Colbert Report has been made
(from Kelly Jordan email) Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub’s homepage reports that Brad Sciullo was the first person to complete the Beer Barrel Belly Bruiser burger by himself. The burger is listed as having 15 pounds of meat and its total weight was 20.2 pounds. Sciullo’s time was 4 hours and 39 minutes, 21 minutes under the 5 hour limit.
update The burger Brad Sciullo finished was not the 9-11 pound “Ye Olde 96er” burger completed by Kate Stelnick and Lori Weiss. It is the next larger size.
