HungrySisters is a new blog describing its focus as: “food, especially (but not necessarily limited to): Dairy Queen, Tacos, and the fine art known as competitive eating.” The sisters traveled west from their home in North Carolina to go to the Krystal Square Off finals and wrote a trip report about it.
The next morning we were ready for the festivities to begin. We ate breakfast at this awesome cafe connected to our hotel. Sadie and I both ordered Chocolate Chip Pancakes. After breakfast, we checked out of the hotel and walked to the riverside where the contest was to take place. We arrived about 2 hours early, but we didn’t have anything better to do, so we watched the Krystal People set up the area for the contest. While we were waiting, we met Crazy Legs Conti!!!! It was the coolest thing ever. It was our first encounter meeting a real-live competitive eater; one who we have seen on TV many, many times. Very exciting!!!

The logos on the home page of IFOCE.com have been changed and the IFOCE store graphic announces that the Major League Eating DVD can be purchased. The DVD page has a review from Robert Gilman which begins:
“Blending the historic integrity of Ken Burns with the stylistic perfection of Scorsese, Major League Eaters delights at every turn. Cookie Jarvis loves two things–celebrity and free food. Sadly he is losing both. Rich and Carlene LeFevre are a dynamic couple with epicurean leanings, but has another eater been leaning a bit too close to Carlene?
The logos for Heinz, Pizza Hut and Netflix have been dropped (cached home page)

ojrifkin · More posts about:Boston, Eagle's Deli
Steve Reeves wrote a negative review of Eagle’s Deli in Boston which mentions the removal of the Polaroid pictures of diners who finished a large burger. The owner of the restaurant responded to the negative review on Digg and says he will set up an online wall of fame at an unspecified time in the future:
The pictures were of people who ate the Godzilla burger (1lb of beef, 4 slices of cheese and 1lb of fries) or higher, most of the pictures were people who ate the Godzilla as very few have finished more then that.
a. The pictures were taken down because their simply was no more room, we have pictures hanging just about everywhere you could pin one and there was no room left and we had stacks of photos to put up with no where to put them.
b. We had 2 ideas
i. Make the new photo level the “Cowabunga†(2lbs of beef, 8 slices of cheese, 2lbs of fries)
ii. Put the pictures up and every year take them down and move them to the web-site making room for new pictures
c. After taking down the photos, patching the walls and painting, we were complemented by many customers, most of them regulars who had been coming for 5, 10 15 some even 20 years on how much cleaner and brighter the places looked and asking us not to put the photos back up. After long considerations we decided to stop the Polaroid photos.
i. At some point all old photos will make it to the web-site and we will look into doing a direct to web-site pictures.
The Phantom Gourmet reports that the first person to finish the deli’s 5 pound burger and 5 pounds of fries will have the sandwich named after him or her. The website also has a list of the best restaurants in Boston serving huge portions.

Ms. Turell comments on the video in this Muscular Development thread and says she has considered entering an eating contest In this musclemayhem thread:
Now one another note… If I to a resturant like for example I went to Cheesecake Factory. I order the big sampler appetizer. i eat the whole thing myself. THe waiter will be like thats alot of food, mentally i am thinking “yeah and your piont is??” I am a paying customer, don’t question me on what I order. I must have ate that thing up in 10 minutes. I then order the big filet mignon and of course cheesecake not 1 but maybe 3 cheesecake to nibble here and there. But that once in a while.
I have ben tempted to enter these food eating contest, but I can’t see myself stuffing face like some of those people. But i would be kinda of fun to try. I would probably pass out or something

ojrifkin · More posts about:Business, Nathan's Hot Dog Contest
The Wall Street Journal Online has a long profile of “activist” investor Nelson Peltz, who is responsible for Heinz’s co-sponsorship of the Nathan’s finals:
Mr. Peltz also believed that Heinz was paying supermarkets too much to promote its products and provide good shelf placement. He said Heinz should seek visibility in other ways, like sponsoring the hot-dog eating contest held each Independence Day at New York’s Coney Island. The activist shareholder also took issue with the 11 billion single-serve ketchup packets Heinz sold each year to fast-food chains, schools and sports venues, calling them messy. His suggestion: Sell ketchup in dip cups like those used for barbeque sauce.
…
Sales and profits at Heinz are up. This past July’s hot-dog eating contest in Coney Island was festooned with inflatable Heinz ketchup bottles. As for messy ketchup packaging, Heinz says that apparently unbeknownst to Mr. Peltz, it had already been selling tens of millions of dip cups annually. “He said, ‘Why don’t we have dip cups?’ the senior Heinz employee recalls. “We do have dip cups.” The company is currently developing larger dip cups, it says.
Heinz stock is up 10.5% since Peltz became involved with the company. Peltz has been recently been accumulating shares of Kraft Foods. Perhaps he can get a Kraft brand to sponsor another eating contest.

Don “Moses” Lerman has a blog entry about his history in the Wing Bowl and his negative experience in Wing Bowl 13. Lerman’s difficulty in entering the arena in that event is mentioned on page 185 of “Horsemen of the Esophagus” by Jason Fagone:
The media-door supplicants aren’t all pretenders. Some are even participants, like Mr. IFOCE himself, George Shea, his neatly slicked hair and sharp suit putting the Philly mooks to shame. Butter champ Don Lerman is here, too. I’m standing right next to him. I know it’s Don Lerman because it says so on his wool hat.

Simmons is warming to the task by eating 10-15 pounds of food a day, wings three times a week. He feels he balances the scales by working out on a regular basis and drinking three gallons of water daily. He currently weighs 332.

I really enjoyed cheerleading.
Like, maybe I should have been a cheerleader. I mean, if I hadn’t gone to the hippie high school with no cheerleading. Or sports. And if I hadn’t quit gymnastics in middle school after hitting my head trying to do a back handspring. And that I would never have been caught dead cheerleading when I was 16. I mean all that aside, I would have made a killer cheerleader.
