CSTV / AICE Collegiate Eating Championship announced

AICE News announces that the finals of the Collegiate Eating Championship will take place at the Wave House in San Diego on April 19. Three collegiate eaters with impressive eating resumes will receive byes, others can enter the finals by competing in a qualifier on April 18. “Furious” Pete of bodybuilding.com will probably be one of the three eaters to receive a bye. Entrants must be currently enrolled in at least three college credits. Foods have yet to be determined, but will be items popular with college students. Jack in the Box is the primary sponsor, so the contest might feature food from that chain.

The contest will be held as part of the Collegiate Nationals sponsored by CSTV. The Collegiate Nationals will consist of four multi-sport events for college students to be held this spring. The other San Diego events will be beach volleyball, flowboarding and a battle of the bands.

CSTV has been acquired by CBS and will be rebranded as the CBS College Sports Network in March during the NCAA basketball tournament. It was not announced if the eating contest will be televised on CSTV. I believe this is AICE’s first deal with a television network.
CSTV has its headquarters in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, like IFOCE / Shea Communications.

Micheal Springer interview in PC newspaper

The website for the newspaper of Providence College has an interview with Michael Springer. Springer was prohibited from competing in the finals for the “Eat The Meat” wing contest after winning a qualifier, but that ban was not mentioned in the interview.

In other news about big eating Friars, this Rhode Island Monthly article about former Providence basketball player, and current ESPN announcer, Doris Burke, reports she is the second biggest eater in women’s basketball:

She’s hungry, and as she parks in the darkness of a casino garage she hopes she isn’t too late for the crew lunch. She works out ninety minutes most days at a gym near her house, and she is as slender as she was twenty years ago when she played at PC. You wouldn’t know it from looking at her, but she can out-eat any woman on the basketball circuit but one, and she’s half Burke’s age.

Sonya Thomas judges contest at Capitals game

sonyacapitals1.jpg sonyacapitals2.jpg

AOL fanhouse has a report and gallery from a hot dog contest held in honor of Dollar Dog Night at yesterday’s Washington Capitals game in which students from several area colleges competed. Virginia Tech student Alex Malycke won a pair of Southwest Airline tickets by eating 7 hot dogs in 3 minutes. Sonya Thomas served as judge and also performed a one minute exhibition.

The Washington Post DC Sports Bog and On Frozen Blog also have reports about the contest (thumbnails above are from On Frozen Blog). On Frozen Blog also has a video of Sonya’s exhibition. Sonya’s moratorium on dunking food in water was not in place during the exhibition.

The owner of the Capitals, Ted Leonsis, is also an executive at AOL, which probably helped in the contest receiving the publicity it did.

In other news about the NHL’s Southeast division, if the Nathan’s qualifiers start at a Florida Panthers game in March as they have the previous two years, we are about a month and a half away from the beginning of that series.

update A longer video is available on youtube which begins with an interview with Sonya.

KrispyKremeChallenge.com reports that this year’s edition of that event will be held on January 26 at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. The contest entails running two miles from NC State to a Krispy Kreme, eating a dozen donuts there, and then returning to the start. Last year’s contest had 1387 registrants, which is probably the largest field for an eating contest in the world.

U of Kentucky repeats as Music City Bowl rib victors

kentucky.scout.com reports that members of the University of Kentucky football team defeated players from Florida State University in both team and individual rib eating contests held by the Music City Bowl in Nashville. The Florida State contingent’s performance might have been hurt by a mass suspension due to a cheating scandal.

The University of Kentucky also won the event last year, defeating Clemson in a contest marred by Clemson defensive tackle Elsmore Gabriel requiring the Heimlich maneuver after getting a piece of bone lodged in his throat.

U of Iowa corn contest banned

HawkCentral.com reports on the cancellation of a corn on the cob eating contest:

The University of Iowa is taking a hard-line stance against a problem epidemic among Americans today:

Eating corn.

A corn-on-the-cob eating contest was to be part of UI’s annual “Beat State Week,” leading up to the Iowa-Iowa State football game.

UI canceled the contest (the corn-eating one, not the football one) because it would “encourage gluttony.”

“With the initiatives we have in terms of promoting health living, at least symbolically, we should not promote activities that would seem to encourage gluttony, particularly with the widespread problem of obesity today,” said Phillip Jones, the vice president for student services.
