U of Iowa reinstates corn eating contest
The Press Citizen reports that the University of Iowa has reinstated a corn eating contest held in conjunction with Beat [Iowa] State Week after it was cancelled last year due to concerns over the national obesity rate. To allay health concerns, the contest format was changed from a timed event to one that awards victory to the first person to finish a single ear of corn.
The contest took place this afternoon, results have yet to be posted.

Coed Chickwich Challenge co-champions
The Harvard student newspaper has an article about the Chickwich Challenge, which entails eating 12 chickwich patties in 12 different dining halls on the Harvard campus (only one bun must be consumed). Two sophomore females, Katherine Tan and Michela DeSantis attempted the challenge and both finished in 2 hours and 43 minutes. As the challenge progressed, the rules were liberalized:
By the time the contestants reached Quincy, they were fading quickly, and a new rule was instituted: each is permitted to approach two strangers and ask them to take one bite out of her chickwich. Though both contestants hesitated to demand this favor of strangers, the thought of less chickwich ultimately won.
DeSantis walked to the end of the dining hall and patiently explained her predicament.
“Is this for some kind of experiment?†asked one doubtful diner.
“No,†DeSantis quickly assured, hoping that the kind soul would agree to her offer.

Brian “Eatin'” Keaton in Baltimore Sun
The Baltimore Sun has an article about University of Maryland student Brian “Eatin'” Keaton. Like Sonya Thomas, Keaton was inspired to enter competitive eating after watching Kobayashi at the Nathan’s finals. Like Kevin Lipsitz, he has competed against a canine in an eating contest. Keaton might have debuted at the 2005 pizza eating contest in Camden, NJ:
Keaton, an agricultural economics major, got his start not long after his Kobayashi epiphany. He learned that the New Jersey state pizza-eating championship, an all-comers event, was to take place a few towns away. He entered, downed a large cheese pie in 10 minutes, and finished fourth, but ahead of several established pros.
