The OC Register has a slideshow of today's "Pig's Trough" eating contest held at Farrell's in Mission Viejo, CA. Matt Cohen won the men's division and Andrea Barber won the women's contest.

Prizes for the Gringo Bandito Taco Challenge have been announced: 1st 5,000 2nd 1,000 3rd $500 4th $250. The contest will take place in Huntington Beach, CA on August 3 and Takeru Kobayashi and Pete Czerwinski are expected to compete. Competitors will need to email a link to a youtube video to receive a spot in a qualifier.

Registration for the gyoza eating contest that will take place at the Nisei Week Festival in downtown Los Angeles on August 20 will open on July 13 at 11 am Pacific. The contest purse has been increased to $5,000.

The Orange County Register has an article about Damon Wells and Stephanie Torres competing in the Nathan's finals which reports that Stephanie Torres won a CIF-Southern Section Division II championship in cross country in 2003 earning her the title of OC Register Girl Runner of the Year.

The IFOCE contests page has been updated with several August & September events:

  • Aug 31 John Ascuaga’s Nugget World Rib Eating Championship, Sparks, NV
  • Sep 3 Buffalo Buffet Bowl, Buffalo, NY
  • Sep 4 U.S. National Buffalo Wing Eating Championship, Buffalo, NY

An IFOCE rib eating contest has been held in July at the Chinook Winds Casino on the Oregon coast. There does not appear to be any information about a 2011 contest on the casino website.

The Los Angeles Daily News reports that female winners of Nathan's qualifiers who ate less that 10 hot dogs will not receive all-expenses paid trips to Coney Island for the finals, so Hawthorne, CA qualifier winner Christine Kitchenmaster will not compete.

A corn dog eating contest at the California State Fair in Sacrament will award $2,800 ($2000 to the winner) on July 23. Qualifiers will take place on July 21 and 22.

Qualifying has started for the 2011 Splendiferously Superiffic Summer Spectacular Ice Cream Eating Challenge at Farrell's Mission Viejo and Santa Clarita locations. Competitors in the July 17 finals will attempt to eat a "Pig's Trough" giant sundae.

Dave Wagner was interviewed for an upcoming documentary on competitive eating about recording a controversial video at last year's Nathan's qualifier in Escondido, CA. He thinks the documentary, which is hoping for a late August release, will be critical of the IFOCE.
