Janus’ last contest was the Brooklyn cannoli eating contest in October. According to the official account of that event, he received second place after he claimed he was credited with an extra plate after tying Badlands Booker. (Interestingly, the Brookly Daily’s account makes no mention of that deduction and claims the margin was .75 cannolis.)

Here is the list of winning Nathan’s qualifier (excluding women-only competitions) totals of 20 or less since 2004 according to the eatfeats database. Gideon Oji’s 16 hot dogs was the lowest winning total for a male for a qualifier held in the USA without entry restrictions in more than 10 years. (The first four qualifiers were limited to military/police/fire)

The women’s winner ate 14. I do not think Sonya Thomas made the contest.

Clayton State Sports has an article about Gideon Oji. If he qualifies he might be the tallest finalist with a height of 6 ft. 9 in.

Joey Chestnut has been headlining the promotion of the contest even though he is not competing: NBCCharlotte | WBTV | Sports Night

This will be the first Nathan’s qualifier for Sonya Thomas since 2011. She has not exceeded 37 hot dogs since 2012. The 27.75 hot dog she ate at last year’s finals was the lowest since her debut year of 2003.

Matt Stonie has posted a video of a training session where he ate 59 hot dogs. If he can match that in tomorrow’s Nathan’s qualifier in Vegas, he would have a chance at breaking the all time qualifier of 59.5 hot dogs (in 12 minutes) set by Joey Chestnut in 2007. The high temperature tomorrow is predicted to be 73 with a chance of rain, which should facilitate high numbers.

In a recent Fink Beats the Stomach podcast, Michelle “Cardboard Shell” Lesco said she hoped to hit 35 hot dogs. This would be the all time non-Asian women’s Nathan’s record, which is still held by Molly Schuyler.
