The Kyle Kendrick prank trade revisited

In February, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick believed he was traded to Japan for “Kobayashi Iwamura” before he learned the transaction was fake. Kendrick’s Wikipedia page says that the names of the fabricated player came from Takeru Kobayashi and infielder Akinori Iwamura of the Tampa Bay Rays, who are currently opposing the Phillies in the World Series. Kendrick did not pitch effectively enough in the regular season to make the post season roster.

Kobayashi sets Krystal qualifier record w/89

update #5Andrew “Skinnyboy” Lane has a trip report

update #4 The Krystal Square Off blog has a contest report which says that Kobayashi ate 100 burgers in 8 minutes the day before the contest. There is also a gallery in which Kobayashi shows off his post-contest stomach.

Al.com has another article

update #3 AL.com has a gallery

update #2 UAB student life has some short videos. The contest was not held inside the stadium

update Steve Ramirez was second w/24, the 3.5+ ratio might still be a record.

According to the Krystal Square Off twitter, Kobayashi ate 89 Krystals in Birmingham today, breaking Joey Chestnut’s qualifier record by 2. Super Paul ate 20. The 4+ ratio between first and second place might be an IFOCE record.

Here is a flashback to another famous international visitor to Alabama – a video of the Rolling Stones recording “Wild Horses” in Muscle Shoals before the infamous Altamont concert.

The most significant previous intersection of competitive eating and UAB athletics probably occurred when UAB soccer player Pam Cooney became half of the first all female pair to finish the Pointersaurus Pizza challenge.

Kobayashi facebook page

A facebook page for Takeru Kobayashi has been set up at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Takeru-Kobayashi/17974913485. The page lists an incorrect birthday for Kobayashi of May 24 (Kobayashi’s actual birthday is March 15), so it might have been created by an impostor.

Freakonomics co-author reports from the Nathan’s finals

Stephen J. Dubner, co-author of Freakonomics, attended the Nathan’s finals and has a short blog entry about that event with a picture of post-contest hot dog debris.

Kobayashi says he dined with an unnamed author who is probably Dubner before the Nathan’s finals and has a blog entry about meeting him .

Dubner says that competitive eating might be a topic of SuperFreakonomics. Will the IFOCE have Ryan Nerz write another book to counter that project?

Kobayashi blogs bilingually on the 2008 Nathan’s finals

Kobayashi has written two blog entries containing English about the recent Nathan’s finals. One thanks fans for their support, the other contains Kobayashi’s thoughts on the overtime format (not automatically translated):

In this case, I think the correct approach is to look at the situation as this: we decided the winner through a different event (rather than that we decided the winner in an extension of the 10-minute battle).

So for me, deciding the champion in a five hot dog challenge is no different to deciding the champion by playing “rock, scissors, paper”.

Kobayashi also has a blog entry comparing winning qualifier totals with the amounts eaten in the finals.
