Houston matzoh ball contest reports

Pat Bertoletti has written a blog entry about his trip to Houston for the matzoh ball eating contest at Kenny & Ziggy’s Deli. He believes he was leading Joey Chestnut until about the five or six minute mark. The report closes with Pat’s thoughts on his current status in the IFOCE:

3 years on the circuit have driven me to reflection. Throught this reflection I have realized that eating is tier based. You start on a natural talent tier and as time, contest experience, and training sets in you have a break through. You then plateau and level off as your body gets used to its new capacity. I have gone through these and am on a plateau. I am trying to get over the hump as we speak. It’s one giant hurtle to overcome. To beat joey and kobey in nathans or krystal is no walk in the park. I don’t know if it’s possible for my body to hold 70 nathans but I am going to damn well try to hit that number on the 4th. One can only play 2nd fiddle for so long before he gets the itch and wants to be the lead. But, there is something to be said when you’re number 2. Motivation comes easier when you know that ever contest you need to up your game and compete on the top level.

The Jewish Daily Forward also has an article about the contest.

Iowa bacon competitor hospitalized

Russ from the Ace of Spades blog, who sought tips on competitive bacon eating, has a report on the contest and his subsequent trip to the hospital where he was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. He does not blame his diabetes on the eating contest since bacon has no carbs and believes his high level of cholesterol is temporary.

I get multiple visits from the hospital’s chronic disease coordinator (diabetes is her biggest bag), the nutritionist, and even a doctor. Not the doctor who I saw on Tuesday (she left for a vacation in ….Belize…. on Tuesday night), but another doctor who I’ve seen in the past for a small ganglia cyst. He sits down to talk with me about my health, and proceeds to tell me that not only do I have high blood sugar, but my LDL reading are way high. I told him about the 2008 First Annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Fest, and he damn near falls out of his chair laughing. To quote him: “You know, I get a lot of stories from patients like “Doc, my readings are just high because I had a big breakfast”, but you’re probably the first patient who’s actually given me a plausible reason for high readings. He decided to re-check my blood in a month to see what it looks like out from under the shadow of bacon.

New Poll: subject of “Stick to Blogging” track

The new poll asks what member of the current IFOCE top 25 would you most like to see a song about on “Stick to Blogging”, Beautiful Brian’s new CD. The desired song could contain either praise or criticism.

A fragment of a song called “Let Me Tell Ya” has been added to the CD website. The song makes accusations of steroid use, but the clip does not provide enough details to determine the identity of the alleged steroid user.

Colorado cookie contest coverage

Liz K wrote a report for Westword about the cookie eating contest held by the Denver Eating Contest meetup group on Friday. She brought along a friend Micah who would finish third, but did not compete herself despite cookie cravings probably caused by her pregnancy.

Andrew Lane was the runner up and produced a blog entry and gallery about the contest. “Mongo” Marquez was the victor.

Thin eaters need not apply

The following request was made by a documentary filmmaker:

Dear Eaters,

A New York based production company is seeking someone from the NY City region who wants to be the star of their own show. We are currently exploring the idea of creating an independent film tracking the journey of an unheralded eater whose goal is to reach the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest on July 4th. The all-access filming would stretch from pre-qualifiers, to the qualifying round, which could be at Shea Stadium, and through to the final in Coney Island. The key is that the subject must be funny, fat and interesting to watch. Interested? Sell us on why it should be you that we follow. Please send your e-mail and a photo and contact details to kannerr@aol.com

Spread the word, and good luck!

USA Today on MLB AYCE

(Via AOL FanHouse) USA Today has an article about and list of Major League Baseball teams that are offering tickets including all you can eat food. At least 13 of the 30 MLB teams are offering some AYCE tickets.

So how much food do fans in these seats consume?

Ron Ranieri, general manager of concessionaire Aramark at Atlanta’s Turner Field, calculates that a typical all-you-can-eat customer downed: 3.35 hot dogs; one 20-ounce soda; one 7.9-ounce bag of peanuts; one 3-ounce order of nachos and 32 ounces of popcorn.

Houston Matzoh Ball report

The Jewish Herald Voice has a report on Sunday’s matzoh ball eating contest held at Kenny’s & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen in Houston. Hopefully the event did not produce a loss for the Marvin Zindler Fund for Pancreatic Cancer Research; only four non-professionals (who contributed at least $250) competed. The contest had a representative from a CPA firm counting each competitor’s total.

Gluttonous Queen 2008 recorded in Hawaii

The Hawaii Waikiki livespace has some pictures from the recording of this year’s edition of “Gluttonous Queen”. Like last year, the final contest took place in a Waikiki shopping mall. The contest will be televised on March 30. Results were not disclosed in the blog entry.

AsianInfatuation has 4 pictures with the caption:

Thanks to my viewers, I now know who this woman is! And I’ve done research to know that it is her for sure. She was at the Waikiki Shopping Plaza today, 3/2 and was mobbed by the Japanese tourists who happened to be in the area.

Her bodyguards and security could barely keep up- but the good thing is the Japanese are very gracious and were very respectful of her.

Having done research, it is noted that has earned her fame through eating contests of all things… and that makes sense, as there was an eating contest today at the Waikiki Shopping plaza.

StarBulletin.com has a captioned picture which reveals the identity of two of the finalists.

Gal Sone’s blog
has no entries between February 27 and March 5. Tomoko Miyake did not make the finals because she was at an event in Nagoya with Nobuyuki Shirota.

A weekly eating contest with a first prize of $100 is held on Saturday evening at the Waikiki Shopping Plaza.
