Conti’s Plate gets an update

(From “Butch”) Crazy Legs Conti has updated his “Plate” column with news of IFOCE events from 2007 and late 2006:

I consider El Wingador to be a true champion and a stand-up guy. I look forward to my next trip to Philly to avoid the cheesesteak and check out his restaurant, El Wingador To-Go. I also look forward to hanging with seasoned pros Wing Kong, Steakbellie, and their families. Any time Wing Kong, a bus, and a stripper pole is involved count me in. They throw up an after party that rivals Dale Boone at the 8-minute mark. Steakbellie is the James Fennimore Cooper of blogging and I look forward to more of his “Leatherwing Tales” www.steakbellie.blogspot.com.

LA Daily News tournament of sports events includes Nathan’s

The Los Angeles Daily News has a column about a tournament of the major events in 16 North American sports:

(13) World Series of Poker vs. (12) Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest

Winner: In this interesting matchup of mid-majors, hot dogs win again. Look at Kobiyashi’s poker face when he’s ready to rumble.

(You would think a major newspaper could spell Kobayashi correctly)

The author says that Nathan’s hot dog eating contest wins its semifinal matchup, but then does not list it in the finals.

“Gluttonous Queen 2007” being recorded in Hawaii

A Japanese blogger is currently on vacation in Hawaii, and s/he saw a television crew recording Natsuko “Gal” Sone competing in the “Gluttonous Queen” contest on Waikiki Beach. The contest will be televised later this month or in April. It is too bad that apparently no American women were invited to compete.

Exactly recording the gluttonous king decisive game being done at the Waikiki beach, it increased.

The gal 曽 root it was.

1969 Harvard pancake champ received chemical assistance

The Harvard Crimson reports that Richard Tarnas was using performance enhancing drugs when he won an eating contest by consuming 17.5 pancakes in December 1969:

Trainer David R. Bishop 72 attributed Tarnas’s victory to his rigid two-week training program.

“We had Rick on a tough schedule-smoking grass every day and never going to bed before 4 a.m.,” said Bishop. “Then the stoned Munchies-brought on by two pre-contest joints-floated my man to victory,” he added.

Richard Tarnas is currently professor of philosophy and psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. His most recent book is Cosmos and Psyche. The astroknavery blog describes the content of that work:

Subtitled, Intimations of a New World View and based, Tarnas claims, upon 30 years* of research, it strives to address what he calls “the profound metaphysical disorientation and groundlessness that pervades contemporary human experience” by suggesting a “new metanarrative that transcends separate cultures and subcultures, an encompassing pattern of meaning that could give to collective human existence a nourishing coherence and intelligibility.”

That meta-narrative, as he calls it, is astrology.

Pat Bertoletti article in Chicago Tribune

There is an article about Pat Bertoletti in the Chicago Tribune.

Bertoletti’s competitive strategy is simple: “I just try to focus and push myself. Every time I’m at a contest, I like to see how far it takes me to get to my breaking point.”

That threshold has become harder to reach since he began eating for sport in 2004 at the suggestion of his sister. He entered a local pizza-eating contest and finished fourth. Bertoletti later registered with the International Federation of Competitive Eating, which regulates the contests for safety.

2000 women’s Olympic marathon winner can eat 72 ounce steak

Natsuko “Gal” Sone is not the only big eating Japanese female distance runner. VAAM-power.com has an interview (originally from the Japan Times) with Naoko Takahashi, the women’s marathon champion in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, in which the gold medalist describes her eating habits:

Mostly Japanese food, even in the States. I don’t think in terms of calories, we just tell the cook what we want to eat. I want to eat this, that, meat, and we just eat whatever as much as we want. I can eat 50 pieces of sushi in one sitting. With meat I can eat a two-kg (4.5 lb or 72 oz.) steak.

VAAM is an energy drink made with hornet juice that Ms. Takahashi credits with reducing muscle fatigue.

British universities want wine tasting classified as a sport

Bordeaux Undiscovered reports that the wine societies of Oxford and Cambridge Universities want to have wine tasting classified as an official collegiate sport. The wine contests will be judged by how many questions about the wine a taster gets correct and not volume or speed of consumption.

Food falls into the sport category – so why not wine? Competitive Eating is considered a sport. This is a sport which involves the consumption of large quantities of food in a short time period – typically 12 minutes or less. I think the rules can be stretched to include wine tasting – don’t you?

As usual it boils down to tradition – and this is a difficult thing to break in our ancient educational establishments. Awarding colours for sporting achievements dates back to the early 19th century when Oxford and Cambridge staged their first rowing races.

Competitve drinking story about Kobayashi

Maryville Daily Forum has a fictional story about trying to outdrink Kobayashi in a modified game of quarters.

I let Kobayashi take the first shot. He misses terribly, and I’m feeling pretty good. I don’t hit my first time, and we go back and forth before I sink the first shot of the match. Kobayashi tips the glass back and downs it with blinding speed. He lets out a huge belch. I could be in a lot of trouble.

The game continues on. He’s hit a few, but I’m kicking his butt. We’re about 45 minutes in, and I’ve downed four to his 11. I know he’s not even close to being full but he is feeling the effects of the alcohol. He keeps sputtering stuff off in Japanese. His translator is trying to keep me up with what he’s saying and then suddenly stops.
