The pumpkin contest between teams from the United States and Japan was broadcast today and R Suzuki has a blog entry about the program
(From anonymous comment) KrystalSquareOff.com reports that “Gentleman” Joe Menchetti ate 24 burgers in 2 minutes in a Krystal prequalifier in Nashville, 4 off the record held by Joey Chestnut and Bob Shoudt. The article mentions Menchetti’s estrangement from the IFOCE, but does not say if he will be allowed to compete in the 8 minute qualifier on Sunday. GJoe is in Tennessee to compete in the Backyard Burgers finals tomorrow in Memphis.
DNJ.com has an article about Juris “Dr. Big Time” Shibayama, who will compete in the Nashville Krystal qualifier.
Last year, he ate 33 burgers. On Sunday, the surgeon is shooting for 40 burgers in eight minutes.
The strategy, Shibayama says, is to chew as little as possible: “Big bites.”
His mother isn’t as excited about the new competitive hobby than his friends.
“She just doesn’t think it is very healthy,” Shibayama said. “Everyone else thinks its pretty cool though, and if I get on ESPN, they’re going to love it.”
A hot dog eating contest produced by filming lego people using stop motion photography can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeVmljjBZpc
The new poll asks what you think is the most impressive debut by a female competitive eater. (I am defining debut as the first eating contest or challenge to receive some degree of media coverage)
JuneauEmpire.com has an interview with pelemeni record holder Dale Boone in its article about tomorrow’s Alaskan pelemeni contest. Boone also discusses his reindeer sausage record that he set in Alaska. The pelemeni record was not set in a continuous 6 minutes but was the sum of three separate rounds.
Transportation Security Administration screeners allowed Boone to walk through security with his 6-foot pelmeni trophy. On the plane, the stewardesses crowed.
“The flight attendant said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, we have our pelmeni champion that you saw on Regis and Kathy Lee,'” Boone said. “Everyone started cheering.”
Back in Georgia, Boone returned to the Atlanta pelmeni restaurant. The curious 300-pound hillbilly was the conquering hero.
“The Russians had seen me on Russian TV,” Boone said. “They couldn’t believe it. They were shaking my hand. Meeting me in person was like they were meeting the president of the United States.”
Chron.com has a column mentioning the Kolache contest which says that Joey is expected to compete in it. Sonya, Pat & Tim are also listed as possible entrants.
A list of all results by females in 8 minute Krystal contests above 20 burgers follows after the jump. Sonya has the top 7 placings on the list. Elizabeth Canady beat Carlene LeFevre’s personal best by 8.

Megamunch has a post on the possible benefits that quick and full reporting of results would provide to a contest sponsor.
Speaking of timely results reporting, I have been unable to find any results from the Buffalo buffet bowl on IFOCE.com three days after the event. Full Jacksonville Krystal results have not been posted yet as well.
KrystalSquareOff.com has a page listing the wild card leaders (which has yet to be updated with Jacksonville results). Wildcards will be chosen according to the following criteria:
The top four three non-winning totals from the Local Finals will qualify for the World Championship via the Wildcard.
In the case of a tie, the Wildcard spot will go to the eater with the highest total in their second-best Local Finals.
Pat Bertoletti has been nominated for a Relly Award (Favorite Real Person: Male) for his ice cream record on the Live with Regis & Kelly show. A list of nominees is available at http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/regisandkelly/contests/rellys/promo.html
The page for the awards is http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/regisandkelly/contests/rellys/promo.html I am not sure if voting is still open.

From a Ken Wong email about Ripley’s Believe It or Not! The Remarkable Revealed
I have seen two piles of the book at a Vancouver Chapters bookstore. I saw Sonya Thomas by flipping through it and seeing page 159 at which I stopped to make notes. I did not have time yesterday to look for any other eating feats mentioned. I will not pay $34.95 for it.

update Jacksonville.com has another article about the contest.
I had intended to liveblog the webcast of the Jacksonville Krystal qualifier, which is supposed to start at 3pm eastern, but it is currently not working.
In the 1970s, Nathan’s held hot dog contests at times other than the fourth of July. The winner of the 1972 Labor Day weekend contest was Melody Andorfer, who ate 12 hot dogs & buns in 5 minutes. The AP did an article on her victory which was printed by several newspapers in the Google News archive:
Nathan’s 23rd annual hot dog eating contest separated the women from the boys at Coney Island Saturday. The woman went to the top. “I can’t believe I ate that all” said the winner, a 105-pound brunette, after she finished 12 seven-inch hot dogs in five minutes, rolls and all. Eighteen-year-old Melody Andorfer, of Astoria, Queens, who belongs to the National Organization for Women and several other liberation groups, drank three large colas with her male runner-up after she beat seven other women and eight men in the contest. Then she had a sandwich for lunch. The runner-up, 260-pound Gary Silverman, 19, Brooklyn, asked the winner for a date after he managed to devour 10 hot dogs during the event. Miss Andorfer, who said she did not feel queasy after the contest, asserted she had ham and eggs, coffee, and orange juice for breakfast. Asked why she entered The contest, Miss Andorfer said, “I’m determined not to let those male chauvinist pigs dominate us any longer.”
No other reports of Ms. Andorfer defending her title or entering another contest can be found online. (A 1973 Coney Island Labor Day weekend hot dog contest was converted to a corn contest due to lack of beef):
Throngs of people flocked to Coney Island on Saturday and some of them found they beat the heat only to encounter another problem: the beef shortage. Because of the lack of beef, a hot dog eating contest was turned into a corn-on-the-cob eating contest. The winner downed four ears of corn in less than three minutes.
After her victory, Melody Andofer does appear on the front pages of two newspaper modeling swimwear at Coney Island:

PATRIOTIC DISPLAY- Melodie Andorfer displays a stars and stripes bikini Wednesday at New York’s Coney Island. She was one of thousands who migrated to the beaches on the Independence Day holiday.

Displaying the Colors One of Melody Andorfer’s lesser known attributes is her ability as a seamstress. Here she models a swim suit she put together for the opening of Coney Island, New York’s summer playground.
The list of expected entrants in today’s Jacksonville Krystal qualifier has been posted. Ranked eaters expected to participate are Hall Hunt (9), Juliet Lee(10), Tim Brown(15) and Richard Foley(50). Bryan Miller has been
Elizabeth Canady set the women’s 2 minute record to qualify by eating 13 Krystals in 2 minutes. The Lee/Canady pairing will probably be the first notable matchup between females in IFOCE history that does not involve Sonya Thomas.
portclintonnewsherald.com reports that Tony Groch, a 68 year old from Toledo, won a pierogi-eating contest at the third annual Perch, Peach, Polka and Pierogi Festival by eating 22 pierogies in 2 minutes. The victory is his fourth pierogi contest win. An article about a 2004 victory for Groch is online.
