The balut (duck embryo) eating contest held in Brooklyn on Saturday might be the most publicized prizeless contest since the 2006 Nathan's finals. (NY Times City Room preview | Yahoo! The Maryland State Fair will hold the Roma Ed Reed Chicken Sausage Eating Contest on Sunday. The winner will receive two club level Ravens tickets, $100 cash and a $100 gift certificate to Michael's Cafe (site of a 2011 choking in a crabcake eating contest which required hospitalization).

North Nevada Buisness Weekly has an article about Joey Chestnut defending his title at the Nugget Best in the West Rib Cook-off, in Sparks, NV on Wednesday where he discusses his post-competitive eating career plans which include opening a boutique hot dog restaurant in San Jose. (Presumably it will not serve Hoffman hot dogs.)

DMagazine reports that Kobayashi will compete in a hot dog eating contest at the Texas State Fair in Dallas on October 16.

Joey Chestnut called Kobayashi’s sponsor “nasty Hoffman crap dogs” and then engaged in a twitter feud with the sausage maker: thread 1 | thread 2 The Sports Hernia has a blog entry wondering if Shea Communications authorized Joey’s tweets.

Takeru Kobayashi will attempt to eat 100 hot dogs without buns at the New York State Fair in Syracuse this evening to set a new record. (The only bunless hot dog record I am aware of it Lynda Kuerth’s mark of eating 23 frankfurters in 3:10 in 1977 recognized by Guinness, which stopped maintaining speed eating records in the early 1990s.) Miki Sudo announces she won the rib eating contest held at the Village Pub in Las Vegas and received a prize of $1,299. Tom Gilbert was the runner-up. The event was her first ever head-to-head eating competition.
