“Eat the Meat” & WCS results
Galleries from the “Eat the Meat” wing eating contest sponsored by WPLR in Connecticut are available. Two separate contests were held: one for in studio qualifiers, the other for top finishers in restaurant qualifiers and both had first prizes of $1000. “Wild Rice” won the first contest and “The Big Cat” was the victor in the other contest.
Miss Elizabeth “First Lady of Wings” gained entrance into the finals by winning an in studio contest. She has galleries of her contests. She finished sixth out of ten in her finals contest.
Steve DePino has some pictures and a slideshow from the finals.
(From Ted Wilson) Full results from the Pittsburgh Wing Championship Series are now available. According to these results, Wing Tut came in 8th place.
“Eat the Meat” qualifier winner banned from finals
According to a recent email, the person in the gray shirt cropped out of the above two pictures was the top finisher in a recent qualifier for WPLR’s Eat the Meat II chicken wing contest with a result of 80 wings in 9 minutes. Due to having previously competed in a Nathan’s qualifier, the winner was not only prohibited from competing in the January 26 finals, he was excised from the radio station’s website pictures above. The contest rules have the following restrictions for “professional” eaters:
Professional eaters, persons recognized by AICE , the IFOCE or members of any professional eating organization or participants in any professional eating competition are not eligible. The decision of professional eater status will be determined by a WPLR Eat the Meat Official and is final.
If former competitors in a professional eating competition are not eligible, then this restriction could be interpreted as prohibiting all competitors in last year’s “Eat the Meat” contest (who were allowed to compete) as it awarded a prize of $1,000. The original winner (whose name was not given in the email) might have a basis for filing an FCC complaint.
Joe Menchetti won a qualifier for last year’s contest, and was also prohibited from competing in the finals.
The final qualifier will take place on January 24 and requires Connecticut residency to enter.
update I received an email from the original winner of the qualifier, Michael Springer. He competed Nathan’s East Hartford Qualifier and came in fifth with 17.5 HDB and also the Ash Creek Ribs contest where he finished second to last with 1.8 lbs. He informed the radio station of those contests and they said that would not block his participation. After he won the qualifier, the radio station disqualified him for being a “professional” eater despite not having won any prizes in his previous contests.

Hartford qualifier moved indoors
From IFOCE.com
“The East Hartford contest is typically held in an open-air parking lot. For years we’ve been blessed with good weather for this event. In consideration of this Saturday’s forecast, we’ve elected to hold the contest in a building that is the former home of an Ames department store. This vacant Ames is in the same strip mall as the Nathan’s Famous in East Hartford. It is the ideal replacement venue for this qualifier.â€

Hartford “Munch Madness” report from GJoe
“Gentleman” Joe Menchetti attended the finals of the bar bite eating contest in Hartford, CT called “Munch Madness” and emailed me the following report:
The winning team had 2 members on it. They called themselves “The Big Boys” They completed the bar bites in 3:33
I did an exhibition where I ate the 12 burgers solo in 2:22
The exhibition came about because I tried to qualify w/my wife in Southington. Long story short, she won’t be in anymore eating contests. At the qualifier, I ate my 1st 3 in 30 sec & the 2nd 3 in 23 sec. So, it was worked out that i’d do an exhibition at the finals. Which was moved to the Hartford location.
A bar bite resemble a White Castle or Krystal…just much better. I believe it is a half lb burger (Pre cooked weight) cut into fourths, put on a lightly toasted bun with a pickle, cheese & a very tasty dijon mustard sauce.
March 24 independent contest reports
The New Haven independent has an article about the vegan cupcake eating contest in New Haven, CT to promote the release of the cookbook by Little Vegan Monsters. The writer did not stay long enough to did not stay long enough to report who won the finals. Picnic style rules were not required:
And the ground rules were serious. You could eat your cupcake straight, you could dip it in water or soy milk, you could sip water before or after each cupcake. Or you could pour soy milk or water over your cupcake before consumption, which everyone agreed was completely disgusting.
Chron.com reports that Joe Mitchell, 32, from Spring Branch won Saturday night’s big Hot Dog Eating Contest at Sam Houston Race Park by eating 9 1/2 Hebrew National hot dogs in 10 minutes, winning a prize of $95.
