The Korea Times has an article (in English) about Sonya Thomas:
When asked if she gets to eat much Korean food, Thomas said she often goes to Korean restaurants, including an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant, in the growing Korean-American community in Virginia. “I usually go for ‘bulgogi,’ spicy-tofu stew and spicy-seafood stew. I also love chewing on Korean dried squid, which I think helps my chewing strength.”
She said she had actually lost some weight since becoming a competitive eater and that her cholesterol levels are normal. She plans to continue competing as long as she can stay healthy.
Aside from being a volume eater, another major advantage she says she has over other competitors is her blazing speed and eating technique. “I am really good when it comes to food where you have to move fast and use hands, like eating chicken wings or oysters or lobsters,” she mused.

The only instance of a pre-1972 Nathan’s hot dog eating contest I could find in the Google news archive was a June 30, 1967 competition held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the hot dog:
Champ Eats 127 Hot Dogs
NEW YORK was the 100th anniversary of the hot dog, and Walter Paul, a 400- pound truckdriver, sat down and ate 127 of them with relish, catsup and mustard. Paul, 32, was rewarded for his Ruthian took him one hour (?) a trophy proclaiming him the world’s champion hot dog eater.’ ,The “dog-in” was held at Nathan’s Famous, the Coney Island frankfurter palace. The occasion was to honor Charles Feltman, who slipped a sausage into a roll in 1867 and named the creation “frankfurter” after his birthplace in Frankfurt, Germany.

The Las Vegas Sun reports on the spectators outside the Clark County Regional Justice Center during OJ Simpson’s bail hearing last month.
Another off-Strip show, the Golden Nugget’s “Defending the Caveman,” sent over a guy in a polyester pelt with a plastic club . A guy in black, maybe with the show, maybe not, gave away doughnuts. “That’s the new Scorsese, right there!” he shouted at a cameraman. He added, in a two-minute span, “Four dead in Ohio! Four dead in Ohio!” and “Free Krispy Kremes!”
Local hot dog eating champ “Kid” Cary DeGrosa held a camera to his face and bellowed like a mastodon across a primeval swamp.
“Wait a minute, wait minute, I’ve got Elvis and the caveman!” he said. “Isn’t this great? It’s not as big as in Los Angeles, but we’re not L.A.”

Ramadan Haleem Eating Contest, Hyderabad, India
The winner of the competition was Mohammad Saleem who managed to eat two kilograms of Haleem in 30 seconds.
“I am feeling really good. They gave us two minutes to finish it but I don’t know in how much time I finished that much,” said Saleem.
An eatery in the city, called ‘Pista House’, started organising this competition in 2003 with vegetarian versions of Haleem during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The owner of eatery said he organised the competition despite recent terror attacks in the city to ease tension among residents.
“We have organised this competition to make people feel a little relaxed,” said M. A. Majeed, organiser of the competition.

The Northwestern University student paper has an article about Pat Bertoletti. The article gets the 2006 corned beef contest in Boston, which Bertoletti won, mixed up with a 2004 Milwaukee competition, where he finished behind Cookie Jarvis and Molly Cary.
Determined to show the world the pizza eating contest was a fluke, he registered immediately in a corn beef n’ cabbage competition in Boston.
Without hesitation, Bertoletti hopped on a flight from O’Hare and headed east. He, unlike a few of the other world-renowned eaters, wasn’t sponsored at the time. All expenses came out of his pocket. If he planned to break even on his trip, he would need to place in the contest.
His finish improved, but he still only took third. Bertoletti had a problem: he was smoked by a girl. Bertoletti says while laughing, “I got killed by a girl, man, who has never done anything. I was kicking myself, dude.â€
