An active website by a competitive eating Sonya

While we await the restoration of sonyatheblackwidow.com (or news of its permanent demise), here is a working web page by another big eater with the same first name. Sonya Sorich, a reporter for the Columbus (GA) Ledger-Enquirer wrote a blog entry in 2007 about her attempt at the 1.5 pound Marine Burger at the Four Winds in Cusseta, Georgia:

Anyway, I’d been twice before, and devoured the [1 pound] Ranger Burger — and fries — with no trouble. It felt good, but I always came home with a sinking realization that I’d hit a plateau. So this time, I knew I had no choice but to order the Marine Burger, a 1.5-lb. burger that’s not even on the menu. It comes with cheese, ham, bacon, tomatoes, pickles, lettuce and onions. And don’t forget the fries and sweet tea.
Honestly, at first I didn’t know if I’d be able to do it. Fortunately, I got an inspirational phone call this morning from my mom in California. Her exact words? “Sonya, you can eat anything.”

Joe Menchetti repeats as “Big A” Challenge champion

A comment to a reflector.com article reports that Joe Menchetti repeated as winner of the “Big A” challenge contest held during last night’s UNC vs. East Carolina baseball game. Menchetti’s time to complete the 50 ounce burger was under 5 minutes, less than his winning time last year of 5:15. The attendance for the game was 5,581, reportedly the largest crowd to ever watch a regular season college baseball game in North Carolina.

Born To Fork attempts the Pointersaurus challenge

The Born to Fork blog has an entry about a Pointersaurus pizza challenge attempt. At least two teams have finished the challenge that have not been added to the finishers list on the restaurant’s website:

We then came to find out that the two guys [who finished a Pointersaurus] the day before did puke. In fact, the one guy puked 6 seconds after the timer went off. All over the floor. So not only did the guys behind the counter have to dish out $500, plus a refund on the pizza, they had to also clean up a pile of pizza puke sitting in front of their counter. That, my friends, is what you call adding insult to injury.

The most enjoyable part of the challenge was hearing the stories of other competitors. Joey Chestnut (the hot dog eating champ) took the pizza down (with the help of his wife, supposedly) in 17 minutes, setting a record. And they said he ate at least ¾ of the pizza himself. Pretty impressive. And Eater X has also completed the challenge. Before the two doctors the day before us, the last pair to finish was a couple of ladies. Apparently their Mizzou football-playing boyfriends drove down and threw their hat in the ring, and failed miserably. And after properly taunting their boyfriends, they stopped by the next day and took the thing down themselves. Apparently they were a couple of “110 lb girls”, but the same guy who said that also said the doctors were skinny like me. So I’ll go out on a limb here and say the girls were probably more in the 150 lb range.

IFOCE contest & Man vs. Food coming to Mallie’s (Detroit area)

The News Herald reports that Mallie’s Sports Bar in Southgate, MI (Detroit area) will host an IFOCE sanctioned calamari contest on May 30 when it unveils a 185 pound burger to break the Guinness record it currently holds:

They are teaming with the International Federation of Competitive Eating for an eating contest May 30 during what they have pegged the restaurant’s Guinness Burger Eating weekend. They are offering a $5,000 cash prize to the winners of the eating competition, and will hold a preliminary contest to seek local eaters.

The preliminary contest will be a hot dog eating contest at 2 p.m. May 3 and 10. There are six spots.

At the official eating contest, contestants will be consuming calamari.

But that won’t be the end of it. In September, the Travel Channel show “Man v. Food” is slated to come to Mallie’s to eat an “absolutely ridiculous burger,” Mallie said.
