Chicago sandwich makers vs. MLE eaters July 26

InChiCity’s calendar has the following entry for July 26:

Taste of Lincoln

You’ve probably seen the Major League Eaters gobbling down hot dogs and chicken wings on TV and wondered who in the world would ever challenge them. Well, Jimmy John’s, purveyor of all things freaky fast, is doing it. But, this is not just an eating competition. Jimmy John’s is betting that one team of their sandwich makers can make sandwiches faster than three World-Class Major League Eaters can eat them. Starting at 3:00pm on July 26th at Taste of Lincoln Avenue you can experience the Freaky Fast Sandwich Making and Eating Contest! Who will be freaky faster?

Pat Bertoletti said he would be one of the MLE team members on the Steve Dahl show.

Peoria contest ($1000 prize) takes aim at Nathan’s

The PJ Star reports that Todd Rawls of Vertucci’s Chicago Style Eats has high ambitions for the Independence Day hot dog eating contest he is organizing in East Peoria, IL:

“Chicago is, in my opinion, the hot dog capital of the world,” Rawls said. “Everybody knows their Chicago dog. So I’m shocked Chicago hasn’t done this. Well, they’ve had their opportunity. East Peoria’s going to do it, and we’re going to get known. I’d love to be able to see this overtake Nathan’s, and I think it can get done quickly if purse money – the money that can be won by eating – exceeds Nathan’s.”

The contest will start off with $1,000 prize money for the winner, but the eatery is looking for sponsors to increase the pot for next year.

The contest has a page on the city of East Peoria’s web page. Prospective entrants will need to qualify at Vertucci’s Chicago Style Eats by eating as many hot dogs as possible in 9 minutes. The best performances will receive entry into the contest and the qualification fee is $9.99

Pat Bertoletti rates Windy City wings

(Via Chicagoist) Pat Bertoletti reviewed wings from nine Chicago restaurants for Time Out Chicago. Bertoletti’s top choice:

Twisted Spoke
(501 N Ogden Ave, 312-666-1500)
THE PLACE Don’t settle for Hooters’ softcore family-friendly porn. Get the real thing at the Spoke’s Saturday-night “Smut and Eggs” showing.
THE VERDICT “These are smoky like roasted chicken. This is the best sauce I’ve tasted, really rich, nice salt and sweet balance. Maybe there’s some chipotle in there. The skin is really crispy. I’d rather lick my fingers clean than use a Wet-Nap.”

In other Chicago wing news, tickets are now on sale for the WingFest that will take place on February 24 A wing eating contest will be held during that event. In previous years, the contest had separate divisions for men and women.

Chicago hot wings to require waiver

(from the Pittsburgh “Wing Tut”) Reuters News reports on a restaurant’s hottest menu item:

A Chicago tavern said on Thursday it will begin selling chicken wings coated in one of the world’s hottest peppers — a dish so hot that patrons first have to sign a waiver agreeing not to sue for injuries.

Jake Melnick’s Corner Tap said the wings made with Red Savina pepper will be served with an alarm bell for patrons to summon waiters with sour cream, milk sugar and white bread if things get out of hand.

The picture accompanying the article is of Elliott “Wing Tut (Philly)” Maruffi-Cowley competing at Wing Bowl 14.

The report about the buffet dispute in Louisiana is currently at the top of the list of most viewed articles categorized as “Odd News”
