News Press has an interview with Pablo Martinez about competing in Saturday's Nathan's qualifier in Fort Myers, FL. Mary Bowers, Crazy Legs Conti, Nate Figueroa, Bill Weller and Steven Rossomando are also expected to compete. The article incorrectly claims the competition will be the first qualifier in southwest Florida; contests were held in Naples, FL in 2012 and 2013.

What is your favorite or most accomplished moment in activism or other DxE activity?

I would say my most accomplished moment in activism was when I was a part of the group that disrupted the Nathan’s hotdog eating contest. It went pretty much according to our plan and got a lot of media attention.

Montclair State in Little Falls, NJ will hold a presentation titled “Ending Racism and Inequality in the Food System” on February 28. One of the speakers has the following biography:

Raffaella Ciavatta- Raffaella Ciavatta is an art director/graphic designer, immigrant, queer, activist, radical dreamer and the co-founder of Collectively Free. She has organized disruptions at Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, St Patrick’s Cathedral on Easter Mass and the Chick-Fil-A grand opening, generating significant media attention for animals.

The UK gambling website Paddy Power is already taking bets on the 2017 men's Nathan's Famous championship. Joey Chestnut is a 1/5 favorite, all other competitors are a combined 3/1 underdog.

The New York Mets promotion schedule lists Nathan's Famous as the sponsors of the Father's Day cap giveaway on June 18, so that is the probable date of the 2017 New York City qualifier.

Gersh Kuntzman, called "the original competitive-eating beat reporter" for his coverage of Nathan's hot dog contest around the turn of the century, wrote a column for the NY Daily News that he described as "a case for political assassinations ... when the victim works for Putin or Hitler".

DNAInfo reports that a federal grand jury will not bring charges against former Brooklyn District Attorney Joe Hynes for using money from civil forfeiture to pay Mortimer Matz for public relations services after determining that Matz' work was non-political and the expenditure was legal. In the early 1970s, Mortimer Matz founded Nathan's hot dog eating contest with Max Rosey. In May, the that indictments were looming in the case.

Howard Lorber, Nathan's Famous chairman and economic policy adviser for Donald Trump, appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box Monday morning and predicted that the president-elect would be "more thoughtful" than his campaign rhetoric after inauguration. Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King has called for a boycott of corporations with owners or executives that publicly backed the Republican candidate; Nathan's Famous does not appear on his list of 12 companies.

Brooklyn Eagle reports that the Corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island were named Nathan and Ida Handwerker Way on September 24 in honor of the founder of Nathan's Famous and his wife.
