2008 Wookey Hole mince pie winner misses record by 5

The Telegraph reports
that Denzil Gunner, a 30 year old solicitor from London, won a prize of £1,000 at today’s mince pie eating contest at Wookey Hole Caves in England. Gunner’s mark of 41 pies in 10 minutes missed the record Sonya Thomas set in 2006 by five pies.

It is not mentioned in the article if the pies used this year were the same size as the pies used two years ago. The pictures above from the Telegraph’s gallery show that the pies used in 2006 might have been larger.

The BBC also has an article.

Spanish food fight to waste 165 tons of tomatoes

The German magazine Der Spiegel has an English article and gallery about La Tomatina, a annual tomato fight that will be held in Buñol, Spain tomorrow. During the event, 150,000 kg (330,000 lb.) of tomatoes are ruined. Despite wasting orders of magnitude more food than any American eating contest, the event does not seem to have drawn the same amount of criticism that competitive eating does.

Hall Hunt Czech trip repot

Hall Hunt has posted a blog entry about his trip to the Czech Republic to compete in eating contests at the Trnkobrani festival. He had difficulty extracting the plum pits from the plum dumplings, which he believed was required for counting purposes, but was actually unnecessary. Saturday’s contest was a pizza / pickles / ice cream triathlon. (If a pregnant woman competed, she might have won that event 😉 )

Wigan (UK) pie contest survives act of dog

The BBC reports that Adrian Frost won a meat pie eating contest in Wigan, England. The contest was threatened after a dog ate many of the competition pies the day before the event, but enough replacement pies were produced. The dog, Charlie, was allowed to repeat his gluttony in the contest:

“The twist is that Dave has turned up this morning saying he wants Charlie to enter the contest.

“We’ve nothing in the rules to say dogs can’t compete so he will be lining up against the other pie eaters and judging by his performance yesterday he’s got a great chance of winning.”

However, it seems that Charlie was still full from Wednesday’s mammoth eating session as Mr Williams revealed that he did not even finish his competition pie.
