Congratulations to Darron Breeden and his wife Caroline on the birth of their son, Edward Timothy Breeden, announced on July 14. He plans to take some time off from competitive eating, raising the possibility that 3 of the current MLE top 5 (Joey Chestnut, Matt Stonie and Darron Breeden) might not compete in that organization in 2023.

Joey Chestnut announces discontinuation of MLE contract

In the latest episode of Barstool Sports Pardon my Take podcast, Joey Chestnut announces that his MLE contract will expire at the end of this year and he is open to the possibility of a matchup with Takeru Kobayashi in 2023. (video clip)

The end of this year is going to be a weird year for me because my contract with Major League Eating and Nathan’s is going to be over. So it’ll be my first year in a long, long time that I can actually eat against Kobayashi. So me and him could find a way to compete because he’ll never compete with Major League Eating again because they have just a childish contract dispute, but there’s a chance that I might be able to eat against him.

It is interesting that even after declining a MLE contract extension, Joey Chestnut still calls Takeru Kobayshi’s schism with the organization a “childish contract dispute”.

Seaside Signal has an article about Cameron McKirdy taking on Eric "Badlands" Booker and 6 other lemonade drinkers in the chugging undercard contest for the July 4 Coney Island hot dog eating championship. Booker's participation in the chugging contest probably implies that he will not be competing in the hot dog eating contest. This will be McKirdy's first MLE event since July 2010.

The MLE twitter has posted the field for Saturday's Nathan's Famous hot dog eating qualifier at the Giant National Capital BBQ Battle in Washington, DC. Pat Bertolett will return to Nathan's after an almost 10 year absence. Congratulations to Darron Breeden and his wife Caroline, who are expecting the birth of their son in early July. There has been speculation that he will miss the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest next month; this would be the reason for his absence.
